Other ppl had the same problem if you mount it vertically as the current of the gyre is to close to your sand.
IMO I would try it horizontal, you create a more natural current as a real reef in your tank and will leave the sand alone and where it need to be.
If you have a tank that is 30" tall I would say that vertically would work as you can mount away from the sand, 27 is pushing it and 24 or less it will not only move water but your sand too.
Keep us updated as you go with the Gyre.

The tank is 31" tall which is why I chose vertical. I also had it turned up to 40% so that had something to do with it. I like the vertical because it moves water well with the highest flow near the top since I have it as high as I can without sucking air. I figure that will give me higher flow up top for when I add SPS later

I like mine. But i don't have any rock, fish or coral in the tank at the moment. :D
I will need a second though, for my 7' tank. Especially to get a nice even direction switch every few hours.

Which mode is most preferable? I have it running 70% constant on a 60" tank with only a return pump. Doesnt seem like that would be too good for corals. Mixed reef

Have yet actually heard anybody say they love theres. Am waiting for the larger pumps myself but also want to hear more from others on their input

I love mine. I have a tall 80 gallon cube and have the gyre set vertically and on 30% pulse mode and since i put it in there all of the LPS are opening so much better. It definitely moves water and will suck up sand if i go over 40%.

I love mine. I have two, and they are the best flow I've ever seen. Much better than Tunze / Vortech in terms of moving massive amounts of water. They're quieter than the MP40/60s, and probably on par with an MP10 running at 100% (in my experience). Louder than Tunzes, however. In your setup, David, I doubt you'd even notice them since you have a good amount of ambient noise. I have them on opposite sides, and my SPS has never looked better. Much better PE on millepora, especially.

My issue before was that I had two MP40s and two 6105s in a 60x27.5x27.5 tank and I couldn't turn them up high enough to get this kind of flow without killing corals close to them. One of these could replace all four of those other pumps, but I added two just to alternate direction every six hours or so.

My biggest complaint has been the noise, which seems to be an issue on thinner glass (7/16-3/8") like mine. A few pieces of silicone in between the pump and the wall solve it pretty well. And really, the only thing I'm unhappy with is CoralVue. They do not support as well as Roger at Tunze or Ecotech. But, for $300, considering the value of the pump replacing >$1200 in pumps and providing better flow to boot, I can't really complain too much.

I have two on the list to put on my CTC overflow and the magnets need to go submersed too.

Probably get one after the ist of the year for my overflow. I have a problem with other powerheads blowing to hard and hurting my sps maybe these will spread the flow enough to keep my sps happy

I have the same issue with everything ive tried I can't put anything in spots because of the concentrated patter the "others" have.

This was the same exact issue I had. I couldn't go over ~50-60% with my Tunzes, or like 70% with my Vortechs because I'd blow tissue off my SPS. I'm running these at 90%, no issues.

What are ya'll doing on these pumps at night??? There is no night mode, no apex integration. Are they running at night??

I'm not a proponent of changing flow at night (the ocean doesn't slow down), so I run them at normal levels.
