Heads up ~

Those of you who went collecting in Port A or who have been in saltwater recently, be aware that there are several cases of flesh-eating bacteria that are causing severe, life-threatening illness in people who fished in waters not too far from where we were this past weekend. If anyone has any wound that appears infected or has nausea, vomiting, and/or fever in connection with an infected wound, please don't screw around but go to a hospital immediately for treatment. Parents, check your children carefully. This stuff is potentially deadly, and in several cases that happened while fishing this past weekend, it's only taken two days from exposure to amputation. I'll try to find some more information about it later today.

The doctors are saying that the risk isn't as high as people are making it seem. There was the poco bueno tournament going on at the time and there were people fishing everywhere (over a couple hundred) and as far as i know only 2 people were infected. The said the guys had scrapes and abrasions from fishing the oyster bars all day. Doctors also said if you are a heavy drinker or have a low immune system you are more apt to get the infection. Like sherri said if you notice any sort of bruising etc then get yourself checked out ASAP. If you do get it, it isn't something to play with. I don't think this is going to be an issue but as they say better safe than sorry.

Maybe your garlic treatment would work for that too Sherri.

Seriously, that stuff is pretty bad. I saw one case of it when I was working in a hospital. Most of those bugs are pretty resistant to our antibiotics and the progression of the infection is very rapid.

So take this as a lesson, support your local fish stores...buy THEIR peppermints...because it's not worth losing a leg over a couple of bucks.

All the peppermint shrimp are hand collected by someone, whether they trade them with friends locally or sell them to LFS's.

Personally, I'm not going to avoid the water because there's some risk. Danger is everywhere.

Thanks for the link, Leslea. :)

I personally dont think that the LFS make their living off peppermint shrimps. They rather you spend 50 or 60 bucks on fish and corals instead. So I dont see the harm. ;)

I know what you're saying. Trust me, I don't ever buy into the mass hysteria caused by the media. Whether it's this, SARS, West Nile, or some other illness. You've probably got a better chance of hitting the lotto than getting sick from gathering peppermint shrimp. :D

By the way...I wasn't serious about the whole "support your local fish stores..." If I didn't have a prego wife at home, I probably would have made the trip.

I'm sorry, I missed the sarcasm and took you literally. :D

[off-topic question]Does your wife avoid the ocean because she's pregnant? The reason I ask is that when I was pregnant, I couldn't retain any sense of balance or sure-footedness while in the water. My husband and I used to do a great deal of surf fishing in Freeport the first couple of years we were married but I couldn't do it any longer while pregnant. Having a belly full of water while being in the surf overwhelmed my ability to maintain any sort of balance. LOL [/off-topic]

I caught the flesh eating bacteria one time between my toes. That stuff really burns fortunetly a couple of sprays of Tinactin and it was gone.

No, that's not the reason. She's a redhead with PALE skin. Therefore, she sunburns pretty quickly.

Let's see...pregnant wife with raging hormones, 1st trimester morning/afternoon/night sickness, and the great possibility of a sunburn...I think I'll stay home this time.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Tinactin is an anti-fungal medication and Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium. You had a fungus, not a flesh-eating bacterial infection. LOL

Sorry I thought I could get a cheap laugh from a Athlete's Foot joke but you are right the science of my joke was so far off it was no longer funny. :D

some thoughts on this:

This bacteria is in the water all the time, just the concentration this year is higher than normal, due to more run-off from upstream rivers. The bays are not getting properly flushed by tides which normally depletes this bacteria.
