To gyre or not to gyre (1 Viewer)

Looking for a little insight here. About to upgrade and increase the flow in my tank (180 gallon). Been looking at the maxspect Xf250s and thinking about putting one on each side with a couple of my koralias on the backside blowing forward. I just haven’t seen anyone’s tank using gyre pumps to get a good look at how they perform other than internet videos. What’s everyone’s opinion on best type of flow and equipment to achieve it?

Agreed. I was considering getting a couple for my 8' tank to alleviate some dead spots but found too many problems while researching them that I decided to pass. Just couldn't justify the initial expense, only to have to pay extra for quick fixes for the poor design. Problems I found were magnets not being strong enough for 3/4" glass and not being compatible with my controller, just to name a few.

Same, didn't bother after hearing all the issues initially. Maybe they are better now. Also, with acros, laminar flow isn't ideal but you get two and alternate current at least.

I have 2 synced together and they work great providing a smooth wave back and forth.

I'm giving the icecap 3k a try on one of my frag tanks...

Have one in each tank. One a Icecap, the other a Maxspect. Definately notice a difference noise-wise, but not with preformance. Cleaning is a pain however and affects preformance much more than with your typical powerhead. But I'm happy enough to keep them.

I'm pretty happy with mine. Other than the return from the sump, it's all I have running on my 6' by 3' tank, and I can only run it at about 60% or it will blow the sand around on the far side of the tank. I agree it does take more maintenance - if I don't take it out and scrub it every few weeks it will totally stop working.

When i see the cleaning instructional video I said this pump is not for me. There are so many fragile plastic components.

My Ecotech pumps - I dip them in vinegar over night without opening anything and in the morning all nice and clean.
