I'm finally ready to put together a rockscape and add water today. I didn't realize the rockscape would be so difficult. I can't seem to put anything together that I'm happy with. Anyone have any tips to share?

I my wife put this one together and I think it looks better in person than in the pictures.

How big is the tank? I think you have too much rock. Personally, I like the first picture the best with a small change:
attachment.php

Keep the scape open to allow for flow between and through the rocks.

That would have. Looked good. We started moving some of the base rocks to the tank. We are now thinking a large structure on the right because there is more room there (due to the overflow being on the left side) and an island on the left.

I love messing with my scape! Im always doing something new. I think my fish appreciate the change of scenery too, they don't get bored :)

I like the island! It is perfect for an island of anemones :) Someone on here has one but their name escapes me. I think your on the right track though, good job! Whats important is that you love it :)

Hi Lynn, looks good-- take a look at the rock work from the side. We tend to set it up in a straight line... making it zip zag a little or creating sort of a cove should help break it up a little. You will enjoy viewing your tank from the side, and breaking the rock work up visually will help.

Also I like to focus on having as little rock touch the sand as I can (and still be stable). This allows flow and light reflection beneath the rock. The light reflection keeps the tank from looking dark over time. Also look at the height of your rock work.... considering whether you will add coral one day and the types, think of how much height you want in your rockwork. Use pieces of rubble to stabilize also ... you can putty them in later. And only putty to stabilize.... too much makes the rockwork too permanent. :)
