I took my sand and caleurpa out of my sump. I am putting my dwarf seahorses in a fish breeder in my sump and I am paranoid about all the live good stuff in the sump going after the horses. Right now I have my sand and caluerpa in a mop bucket with water just over the caluerpa and 2 airline tubing providing air to the water. Is this adequate to keep everything alive? It really stinks, almost like sulfur, I wonder if that is my sand. I am putting microvert stuff in there occasionally. Thanks for any advice.

I think you'll have your answer in a day, or two.

Just to say, if things go south you may want to exit to the garage with that bucket.

you stirred up the sand, eh? well, a lot of the anaerobic bacteria create hydrogen sulfide as a byproduct of denitrification. that's probably to what you can attribute the rotten egg smell. H2S is toxic stuff. I don't know if you want to keep the fuge bucket connected to the sump since your tank will be exposed to a toxic compound. you might wait til everything settles, then decant the water in a drain and fill the bucket with regular tank water. give it a try if you think you or your tank will head south.

cparka,

I took all my sand and caleurpa out of the sump so it is sitting in a bucket all by itself with air bubbles going thru it and a light on top. I see amphipods and stuff in it still but I do have that egg smell. Are you saying that I cant use that water or sand that I have in the bucket anymore? Or are you saying I can, just change the water? Thanks
