Oh boy........... writing this you guys think I'm crazy, but just want to point out something that I experienced 38 years ago, "Total Solar Eclipse"
We had a last one in 1979 and many still remember that event but how little we knew about our reef tanks.
Pretty sure majority hobbyist in the hobby now weren't even born or in the hobby at that time.
I did experienced some weird event on that day as my fish were swimming erratically in the tank both fresh and salt water.
Even when I went to the LFS that day as that was your only info source that time and they experienced the same event.
Talking later in our weekend meeting with other hobbyist only the few that had their lights on did noticed something weird and that time we didn't had much of lights, most were running T12 a few VHO's
Anybody else remember this event and if so what about if you had a aquarium of some sort?

That said I'm going to program my lights to reduce it to 67%, so only 23% of my light will be on next Monday 08/21 just in case of any weird effects.
The reason I do the 23/67% ratio is that Houston will experience not a total solar eclipse but only 67% of it.
In any other parts of the US it's different of course, but you can google your area.
We all know that animals have a better sense of noticing any change in weather pattern due to the barometric pressure and I just want to help them a little to ease the stress.
Any thoughts??

Interesting observations Ben, and I'll admit, I wasn't on this earth during the last solar eclipse.

They could potentially sense something different we don't understand or know about.

It was a weird experience and that time I couldn't relate it to the eclipse, just a few days later when some other ppl had the same experience as well we knew that it maybe might had to do with the eclipse.
I tell you what in 2007 when I was doing a lot of fresh water shrimp breeding we got hit here in Houston with a bad scary aggressive thunderstorm.
My fresh water shrimp were swimming all over the tanks and I had a whole shrimp farm going with a total of 35 tanks, had shrimp in 4 displays and shrimp in the pond outside.
When lighting hit a house just down the street and it cracked the foundation of that house we all went outside to look as even he bricks were split in halve from top to bottom.
When I came back in my son told me that his shrimp in his room all died, up to inspection on all my tanks all adult shrimp were dead, just the tiny 1mm babies were still ok.
Now it can have to do with a power surge but due to investigation I did it could had also to do with the electrical radiation field surrounding us.
3 months later all baby shrimp were big and old enough to breed but it shut down my operation to supply some LFS in Houston for at least 6 months.
I believe there are a few members on here that bought some shrimp from me at that time who were also in fresh water and I think they still are, Miguel is one of them.

I was only 7 or 8 during the last "Total Solar Eclipse" and I never had a small fish tank until college. I wouldn't doubt it there is a lot of gravitational pull from the moon sun etc. (the moon's and sun's gravitational pull does cause the tides! or at the very least effects them!)

Everyone also forgets we are made up of a lot of water as well.

If you think anyone would think you are crazy just talk to any ER or Police they will tell you weird things happen on a full moon much less something major.

I worked from home today, partially because it's always better that way, but also so I could see if the fish behaved differently. I did not notice any change at all. Did anybody else see any different behavior? Of course, we only had a partial eclipse so it was probably less likely to have any affect here.

I thought something strange was happening Saturday morning, when my leopard wrasse didn't wake up until like 12:45. I was starting to worry that he had died, because he is always up at least by 11:00. I thought maybe the coming eclipse was affecting him in some way, but he got up at the normal time yesterday and today, so I guess he was just sleeping in or watching Saturday morning cartoons under the sand.

I stayed home as well and you never believed what I did during the solar eclipse??

Any ways, all geared up and ready to face what was coming,
solar20171-L.jpg

I did conquer the dreadful eclipse

Here my sad tank before the eclipse around 11:30 am,

Here the tank during the 66% eclipse,

That's correct "lights out"

and here after the total fatality

So I hate to say nothing to report here.
Although my collection of shades did help me to look at the eclipse for some time only event left to bother me is a stiff neck.

Thumbs up on 2017 and we will meet you again in 2024.

The Inferno anemone that I promised you when you considered to take the tank from Graydon?
Well it split litarly under my own eyes this afternoon
Just need to see how I get it off the rock and where to put it temporally :noidea:
No more frag tanks for the Diesel.
I guess when I get it off I can put in my nem basket in the sump but don't have a light there.

I used a welding mask rated 14 and yet my eyes are burning.
On another note, here we are with all these fancy lights, one better that the other, thinking that we create a perfect environment and yet we can not come even close to the strength of the sun.
I can last maybe 32.6 seconds to look into my Hybrid but 2 seconds to the sun is destroying my eyes.
I'm testing a bunch of new LED's for the freshwater planted tanks and vivariums as I'm out of that for a while.
Some were send to me free (thank you Ecotech, jungle dawn and orpheck) but I'm amazed how much more par they throw out than our reef lights.
Oh well that's a different story for another time.
