I'm upgrading to a 180. Have spent the past few weeks prepping the new tank and am about ready to make the move. The new tank will be moved in, filled 2/3 with new water, substrate dropped in and then will begin the transfer of water and livestock from my 75. I've read threads on this before but want some additional input to try and minimize impact on livestock.

I am not transferring sand (just a scoop or two) from the 75, but all the rock, fish and corals will move. Should I expect a mini-cycle in the 180? Any advice from those who have done this before? Would I be better served filling the 180 with all new water and letting it run for a few days/weeks before moving my livestock?

I'm currently in the same process (upgrading from a 75RR to a 210RR). Spoke with Dave (City Pets) when they delivered my tank...he explained that it would be best to use some existing sand to 'seed' the new tank, transfer some live rock over and let it mini-cycle. Then check all water parameters and transfer the rest if it all checks out.

I was originally thinking about doing as you mentioned- but have now decided to follow his advice. Too much to loose - if you know what I mean.

I did that myself, works just test your water frequently so you can stay on top of any changes.

When I changed from my 40 to the 60 + 29 sump, I took about 2 weeks to transfer everything over. I used new (used dry) sand and transferred over about 1/4 of my rock along with some new live rock I got, and several cups of my old sand. Then I moved a couple of my lesser fish. I slowly moved the rest of the rock and fish, a few at a time every 2-3 days over the next 2 weeks. Things worked out just fine. Whenever I get my next tank, I'll do it about the same way again.

Good luck!
