I just transferred over to a 120 gallon tank, I transferred over my water and water from the tank when I got it so it was already fine, tested the water levels and they were all fine so I have the fish and corals in there now, problem is this tank wasnt drilled so it has a hang on back overflow box and I dont know how to get it started draining up through the u shaped tube. I watched a video online but didnt understand how they did it. Anyone know how? [/u]

First off, plavce 3' or longer 1/4'' clear line in the U tube as far up the U tube as you can. If your external box has a divider; place the U tube in the divided part that holds water, not the side with the drain hole. Fill that divided side with tank water. Make sure that both ends of the U tube is submerged in water. Now suck on the 1/4'' line till water completely fills it.

If your external overflow don't have a divider, it should have some kind of pvc raiser on the drain so that it can keep some water in the box (enough to go past the bottom of the U tube). You would just have to place the U tube in both boxes making wure that both ends are under water. Suck on the 1/4'' tube and prime just like above.

Wendy that u-tube needs to be on the side without the drain.

Yes I have it on the divided side but the water level goes higher up over the divider and drains down the piece of pipe over the drain hole. Was really easy to get it started. After trying to figure it out for the past 2 hours I finally asked here and got it first time I tried.

For my 2 cents worth

I had one very similar to the one pictured on my 180 except it had 2 u tubes. After about a month I dumped it in favor of a CPR Aquatics overflow box. Much better flow and quieter not to mention there are no tubes.
