I'll be upgrading tanks soon, kind of up in the air on what to go with as far as flow. I know the MP40's are very popular but it also seems quite a bit of people have issues with them. Are they worth the extra money, is there that big of a difference?
You can get two Tunze stream 6125's (3,100gph each) for not much more than one MP40, granted they wont be controllable.

Just looking for some real world feedback.

I like the look of MP40 and the controller go with it. But the Tunze is much stronger and less problems to me.

I have a MP40. I like the programmable feature and I also have the battery backup. It seems like we have semi-regular power outages and while they typically aren't very long it is nice to know the water is still moving in the display. Another plus is the minimal equipment inside the tank.

I have no experience with Tunze so can't comment on them.

Both are good choices and great companies to deal with. Tunze is way more powerful though. I used VorTech (3 of them) for a couple of years and now I moved on to Tunze. You should look at the smaller tunze pumps.

Both of them have their advantages and disadvantages, but I'll always take the wide flow and smaller footprint of the Vortech anyday over the Tunze. With the Vortech, you don't have to worry about stray voltage or excess heat being added in the tank either because the motor is external. If you are one that doesn't enjoy the look of powerheads or other equiptment in your tank then I say definately get the Vortechs.

This why I'm trying Vortechs on my new tank. I currently have koralias and a Tunze Nano 6045 in my 46g. The tunze pushes a ton of water but it's kinda narrow (compared to what I hear you get with the vortechs) and even the nano size is big and ugly. And when i need to pull them out for cleaning algae off of it, I'll only need to pull out the front half, no wires and brackets to worry about. Also looking forward to the programmable/wavemaking option and the battery backup.

It just takes less space in the tank and it's not bulky. I'm running one tunze on a controller for wave action and one without the controller. I sold my VorTechs because my tank is .75" thick and I could make the wet side stick to the glass.

How big is your new tank?

I also have 2 vortech myself and loves it. I have a .75" glass and never have a problem w/it. I may try out some tunze as I'm going BB.

Another Vortech supporter here!
I'm rocking 4 on my tank now. I did have a problem with my 2 newer ones, but that was solved quickly with new wet-side bearings. The battery backup saved my (tank's) skin the day after I bought it.

Just add another pair of Vortechs.....Run one pair synched in reef crest and the other pair synched in lagoon. That will give you awesome random flow and definately keep the bottom of a 180g spotless.

It all depends on where you want to position them for one, I have had 4 vortechs and I currently have 4 Tunze 6105's. I swapped for a few reasons, the tunze's are silent for one, when running in pulsed mode you get to listen to the motor ramp up and down on the vortechs. I did have a problem with the magnets rusting out on the wet sides, which ecotech rolled out a fix for. The main reason for the swap was because I have a peninsula tank and I didn't want wires running down the outside of my tank skin. Plus I was limited on where I could place the power heads. I like the tunze's and will be purchasing a few 6305's shortly and sticking a few of the 6105's into deco rocks.

If the Vortechs are anything but dead silent, they need to have the bearings replaced. They replaced my bearings about a month ago and both of mine are dead silent now no matter what mode.
