I've been diving in Cozumel for over 13 years. At least 25 trips worth, and I've never run into a couple of things I saw this trip. I believe that someone dumped some stuff out of their aquarium or something, because I'm pretty sure that this isn't indiginous to the area.
This almost looks like some kind of open brain:

The pictures are off of my video camera and it doesn't take great stills, but you can see it ok.

I've got video of a carpet anemone that recently split and I'm also thinking that they don't belong in Cozumel.

Any expert opinons?

Not sure what you are talking about Ken, - Those are awesome pics! Wish I had that camera and coral! Can you post the pics of the carpet?

:D Thanks Eric!
I added some more pics to here: http://www.pbase.com/jawsk2/fish_stuff&page=all

But, I can't post the pics of the carpet, as I was using the video at that time. My setup takes WAY better video than stills, the stills were an afterthought I'm thinking. When I get the video edited, you can check that out if you want.
I'm actually trying to sell the video setup to get a housing for my digital SLR so I can take some good stills.

As far as the carpet goes, it looked neon green/yellow, but that was at 80 feet with no lights, so it was probably red. The divemaster knows exactly where it was, so the next time I go, I'll hopefully be able to get some good pics with strobes!

I am freaking out looking at those pics! Seahorses too? When the wife and I went we went snorkeling around the hotels. This is quite a bit different from all the nothing we saw. Looks like you got rid of all your xenia in your tank too.

it's kind of wierd that it grows inside a shell.. It looks more like a blastomussa or candy cane to me rather than a brain since you can see the individual polyps.. Is that the only piece you see there or there're several of them?

great pics! can't believe that you can take such clear pics under water!

Yes, they have stichodactyla (carpet) anemones in Cozumel. I have seen them in Belize too. They will sting/eat your fish - they are not host anemones. (diff species)

The coral is growing in a barrel sponge (zestospongia (sp?))

Nice shots.

Cheers

The coral looks like a Lobophyllia, but I'm sure it's something indigenous. There are a good many corals in the Caribbean that have that appearance.

Looks like Mussa angulosa to me.We are culturing this species in our facility. James is right about the sponge.

reefsavers, when will cultured coral start to become available from your facility?

G

Depends on what coral you are talking about. The Florida Keys coral most likely will never be available because we use it for research and restoration. All of the Indo-Pacific coral has been available for awhile now. :)

No you did not miss a website because it is being developed right now.

It will only be a information site because we only sell wholesale. You would see more of our quality, eco-friendly livestock here but the lfs wont purchase from us. I guess their suppliers are just too good....LOL

I think this is called hyjacking the thread so I guess I should apologize in advance, but I want to make sure I understand what you are saying here. There is a LOCAL source of aqua cultured quality live coral and the Houston LFS community prefers to send our money outside Texas? Well that fits with my recent experiences with them. May I ask why you dont offer retail?

It does suck but all of our business is outside of Houston. We live in a big country and believe it or not Houston is not a great market.Generally speaking it is pretty rundown here and I think we all can gauge this by the quality of corals and the care that is rendered! We have sent every store in Houston price list(and our price is more than competitive)but for some reason they are set on their current path of destruction. :)
Jawsk2-great photos/sorry for hijacking your thread.
