My brother has seen something regarding using rebar (iron, not steel) to help corals grow in propogation tanks. I was wondering about this.

Would an electrostatically chaged peice of rebar put in base of the coral frag actually draw Ca towards the coral helping it grow?

It would seem that iron would rust way too easily and leech toxic chemicals into the tank. It would need to be coated to avoid corroded. If you are refering to the article describing the coral reporduction in southeast asia? I am not sure exactly what they used for the frame.

I wouldn't use rebar. It will rust and leech chemicals. And I wouldn't use electricity in a closed system(i.e. fish tank).

What Holly posted was exactly what I read and am actually researching the possibility of... The current in the thank would be equal to that of a 9V battery so not enough to hurt anything, and the tank would be grounded.. in fact this principle exists in your aquariums today... ever wonder y your powerheads get covered in corriline so quickly???

bpynckel, good point with the powerhead....

Maybe just take a rod coat it in epoxy then run some small small small voltage through it and see what happense... it will be sealed from the water and rusting but it should still make an electric field around it

Maybe this will act like a rectifier for pipelines. A rectifier runs Electricity to the pipe and prevents it from rusting in the ground. So maybe if you run Elec. to the rebar it will not rust. Just a Thought
