Seriously... One person registered for the Chemistry workshop :?

People complained about lack of Regular club meetings and workshops.... then you don't support them.

Regardless of the location, either support these efforts with attendance or there is no point in wasting these speakers travel time, expenses and the time required to setup these events.

Oh my.

I want to come, but our weekends are so tight as it is, depending on its location if its an hour and a half from me that 3 hours round trip plus time at the meeting.

I am normally down for all club events but the closer it gets to the holidays the harder it is and more time will be limited. I know everyone has a reason and mine is just one of many, but I think most people, like myself, are waiting to see where it will be hosted so they know if time will be available.

If its done on the south side whats the location if you dont mind me asking?

I signed up. I hope Mike is successful at getting it hosted at Fish Gallery.

That would be cool, a good somewhat central location.
+1 for me too. Fish Gallery would be awesome. I fall in the same predicament for distance. Not to mention if I am on call for work, forget it, Im tied to a computer.

I offered to call Fish Gallery but Ray has not finalized his decision yet since it is his event.

This is the same complaint about events year after year. Not enough participation from members. And a lot of it is probably that a place has not been picked.

Meetings on a quarterly basis to discuss MARSH business along with some frag swappin' would be one thing...spending half a weekend driving across the county to listen to a "speaker" say the same things found on the internet is another. You'll get more interest for hands-on "workshops" like the moonlight builds we did a few years back. Good luck though. We're seriously arranging for travel and expenses for a speaker about reef chemistry? If MARSH is paying for it, I'd say it's time to call it off before it's too late. Seems like a waste with the response rate.

Maybe low signup is due to concern about location? I dunno.

Yes. I didn't attend the acrylics workshop, even though I would have liked to, mostly because of the distance and time involved. I just can't justify spending that much of my free time, 3 hrs + 2 hrs driving, especially with me working overtime and weekends a lot now. Three hours, including drive time, is about the max for me to get away with. :D

Depending on the final location, I will see if I can make it. I may have to work that day. If so, then I'll be by downtown anyways and I can take a "long" lunch.

I completely agree with you. I can't believe reef clubs pay these speakers for speaking engagements...they should volunteer their time. The goal is to educate the public about reef keeping. It is understandable if the speaker is covering room/board costs but to pay them additional funds for speaking, it's non-sense.

Maybe switching months would help with attendance? Once on the south side once something north then something in the middle. That seems like a good idea. Might also be helpful to have the events planned in advance. This way we arent scrambling at the last min trying to find a location thats agreeable and everyone will know ahead of time when and where its going to be.

Moody Gardens is having their Chemistry guys come in voluntarily.

That said we've asked for help on finding other locations and even offered to have this event hosted on the North side, if a location could be established.

Also I don't expect every person to have the same interest in every topic. The chemistry workshop was requested a number of times by members.

If the interest in holding a chemistry workshop has fallen off then so be it we'll thank Moody for the effort to arrange the team and make other plans.

Regards,
