nyos
alk 10 drops = 3.5meq ~ about 9.5 dkh

125 gall with 40 in sump

Would be good to see a couple of pics. Coraline is typically purple although it can get dark. I would hate to say that the red your seeing is coraline because cyano can also appear red.

Is it slimy? Bubbly? Stringy?

Also, I think your Magnesium and Alk are a pinch too high :)

^^^^^ what she said ^^^^^^

Green algae is a form of too much light and no balance.
Balance doesn't mean you got perfect test results though.
5 months is still a baby tank in this hobby.

Po4 is undetectable which means you need to feed more or you made a test error.
Yes ALK is always different when you use different test kits even if you use 3 red sea ALK test kits you still get a different #.
If you ask what's the right # I will go with the test kit you like the most.

What will be a good game plan for this setup............. regular water changes about twice a week with at least 3 days interval between of 10 gallon each.
Feed moderate a variety of 4 frozen foods and no dry food, drop a pinch of dry/flake food in your filter sock if you use them.

No dosing for the BIG 3 required on the moment, just a few ml of AA per week.

What kind of lights and what schedule do you run, oh please don't tell me you got your light ramping up before 10AM, cause if you do they need to be totally off by 8pm.

Stringy and bubbly

Yeah the lighting was off. On at 7 am off at 10 pm. And a friend of mine told me to turn off the light for a few days to clear up the diatoms. Phosphate was high a month ago since one of my clown went missing in the tank. The skimmer pulling out thick black gooey during that time. now it just a light green waste.

From 7am through 10pm.......... that's crazy.
Yes you can argue that the reef has long exposure days too but that tiny glass box we have loaded full of fish from around the world isn't not even close to the reef.

Do some test on the nasty stuff you have.
I already know what you have but I want you to find out as you will never forget.

For Cyano, take a portion of that red mat you see in your tank and place it into a cup with about 2 cups of tank water.
Now add 1ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide
Over the course of several hours you may start to see a change in the water and the color of your sample.
If in fact it is the common cyanobacteria and not spirulina the water will start to turn a pink color and the sample with start to turn a green color.
Now if it is spirulina there will be no change as h2o2 has little effect on the individual cells.

To identify dinoflagellates you'll need to siphon some algae into a container preferably with a lid or cap. After filling up the container shake the water up vigorously to break up the algae. Then filter the water through a paper towel or filter sock, the water should be rather clear. Leave the water exposed to ambient light in this container for 30-120 minutes. In my experience dinoflagellate algae will be the only type that aggregates back together quickly in the container.

With Po4 high a month ago you probably lost your balance on bacs as well, as why you now have a algae problem.
Due to that you reading Po4 low or undetectable but really they are still high, only thing is your algae will get to them first before you can test them, common in this situation.

You can do the three day of darkness, as you turn all lights off and cover the tank with black towels (no plastic trash bags or any other dark plastic) no peeking aloud during the three days, no feeding of fish nor corals, turn dosings off but leave skimmer running.
Of course all other pumps need to be keeping running too.
If you have a nutrient export schedule on your pumps add one or two to them for the export of dead algae to have it skimmed off ASAP.

I scraped some of the red off the rock and did what you said with the h2o2. It turned to green this morning.

As for testing with the Hanna’s, what I do for all the test is I check 3 times and average it out. I do this with my alk and calcium Hanna’s. That’s what I do to get a good point where my parameters are at.
