what do yall use to store water? I use the grey brute trash cans but here lately some type of residue is being left inside the one holding saltwater. Water test good for phosphates so I havent really worried about it but after my tank went jim jones :-x Im trying to make certain everything is good to go. :)

i use the same for salt mixing and get the same residue you mention. when i see it flaking i take the water hose to it and spray it down and it comes off fairly easy.

Eric borneman posted up something about those brute trashcans we all use in RC. Thinking of looking for alternatives on my water storage since I use the same brute trashcans.

I only have a 110 gal tank and a 55, i use 5 gal buckets to store my top off water and mixed water when i'm ready for a water change. (No residue) as i don't leave them there long.

He posted it on his forum on Marine Depot. He thinks that when they put coral spawn into the Brutes they had decreased survival.

Whether the Brute is to blame or not, HDPE drums are a great idea - I've always wanted some. I hear you can even get them surplus.

Cheers

I think that the end result after getting Phd organic chemists specializing in plastics involved, was that the culprit was probably BPA's. These chemicals are as I understand it plasticizers to make plastics more flexible. They are being linked to developmental problems in very small doses. The scary part is they are used in the manufacture of baby bottles. Progress is not always what it seems. I've never heard of glass causing any problems other than not sterilizing.

I'm glad to hear that lesd. What about all the children fom25 years ago? My father was an organic chemist for Eastman Kodak in plastics. (polyethylene/propylene etc.) and has told me "you just think the tobacco companys have some secrets". I'm just saying sometimes technology moves faster than our ability to use it wisely. We had a problem earlier this year using a TuffStuff brand water trough as a RODI storage. Even after many scrubbings and rinsings it still formed a jelly slime layer on the walls after a couple of days. We went to a Rubbermaid brand and no problems. We used to use a unicellular foam as a sump filter instead of a sock worked fine until we went with a brand from WAl-Mart and almost killed everything in the tank in 15 minutes. Just saying be very careful all is not what it seems to be,
