I was just wondering what you guys that have tanks around the 190 gallon size are running for heaters (watts) here in Houston? I used to run 2 heaters in my old 130g but it was a colder.
Thanks,

I would run 2 heaters, not one ... especially if one fails.

Recent advise from another reefer to a friend was to run 3w per gallon across multiple heaters.

I'm currently using Cobalt in all 3 tanks, but reviews lean toward Eheim Jagers

300/W.

I run 1 heater & have the apex cut another one on if the 1st one fails.

I don't run 2 at a time because I try to minimize the chance of a heater blowing up in the sump. Some heaters can fail in the on position which would nuke the tank.

RULE 1: You must use a temperature controller, regardless of the brand of heater.

RULE 2: Use two heaters in your tank. This way, when one craps out (and it will) the other will maintain temperature, or at least close to temperature.

NOW, as far as choice of heaters:

IMO Ehiem Jager’s are the best. The glass on these things is real thick. The only problem is that they are long.

I used to have a Titanium heater but reading the latest reviews they work the best but can start leaking and as result a crash.

The cheapest I could find them are at Jager Heaters but with Black Friday coming up you probably can get them cheaper either at Ken's or just browse.

If you run them through a APEX here's a schedule that most use,

Fallback OFF
If Temp < 77.8 Then ON
If Temp > 78.8 Then OFF

It's up to you how you run your temperature cause that all depends how you keep your area where the tank is housed on temperature.

2 Heaters

Like everyone has recommended, I run 2 400 watt heaters on a 200 gallon and the apex runs one 0.5 degrees higher than the other so if one fails I have a backup. I run marinelands as there 400w is the same length as the eheim 300s. With any of these big heaters it is a must to run a temperature controller. If you don't have a full controller on your system finnex and jbj make fairly affordable temp only controllers which will save you when the heater eventually sticks.

I've been using Eheim Jager's and I like them. The fluctuations in my QT/HT's are a little too much though. I'll be going to Neotherm's for those. As far as a display with larger water volume and running on the apex, they're great!

I always get my Jager's at Value Pet Supplies. You can use this code at check out for free shipping (FST19). Just make sure you buy at least $20. They have the best deal on the net with Jager's.
