What's going on with my birdsnest (1 Viewer)

Not sure what's going on with my Birds nest looked fine the night before now it looks half dead . I've seen the damsel picking at it .....could he have done this in one night

I doubt it is the damsel, more than likely something water chemistry wise has changed. I would break off a couple of frags before the whole thing dies. I had the same thing happen and it will continue to spread. I broke off a few pieces and those survived. Have you changed anything tanks wise? I would test the water.

Waters good ..all the other sps looks good also the only thing tankwise that changed is that I pruned the chaeto

That is weird bird-nest is pretty hardy. If the other SPS looks good then maybe the damsel did have something to do with it.

That's definitely water chemistry. IMO, the green birdsnest above is pretty, but the structure gets crazy after they get bigger. I have some in my tank and I'm more into structural corals that grow more uniform. I'm fixing to get rid of mine all together.

that sucks... hate when a random SPS takes a nose a dive for no apparent reason... any alk spikes or bounces? although I would think other SPS would exhibit symptoms..

Alk's at 9dkh no spikes that I've seen .... Everyithing else has full polyp extension I've never seen coral die in 24hrs before.
The frags seen to be doing fine

For what its worth, my experience has been that birdsnest have a very low tolerance for parameter changes. Though they are considered easy to keep as once settled, they grow like weeds in almost any condition, the abrupt change in any condition can send them over the edge.

My guess is your trimming of the chaeto could have abruptly changed your nutrient levels and caused an RTN event that caused it to wither away so quickly.

I have a tank full of acros and I only kept one birdsnest in the whole tank. Any abrupt changes would send it into a frenzy but all the acros didn't bat an eyelash.

Fortunately it grows like a weed so trim any live pieces like what you did and let it grow out again. Here was mine before I removed it from the system.

My bird-nest did the same thing. Grew like and was really big. Then all of a sudden one day died in 24 hours. The pieces fraged grew like crazy.

I am going to ask a stupid question... So are corals "plants" or "animals?" The soft corals I would lean towards animals the hard coral makes me wonder about a plant? And don't tell me about them eating there are plants out there that eat too! some even small mice.

I hope I don't get laughed off of here on this. The reason I am asking is plants will have a life cycle annuals only live a year bi-annuals 2 years, perennials live longer but sooner or later really die and new babies take their place. Of course you also have those plants that you get away with living longer because of your weather, growing conditions, keeping the blossoms cut off, etc. You can also save a plant from "death" by taking cuttings and making new starts before the plant will die just like corals. Like the blooming fuchsia.

Yea I know I probably should have just googled this.

Not sure if I found the same documentary but it explained it right off. Tiny colonies of little animals. I thought they had to be animals but I kept wondering with some of their characteristics. Lots of documentaries on you tube. Amazing and here I was looking on Nexflix. I should have known!
