I just got done calling Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, and Hobby Lobby and I cannot locate any weld on solvent. Does anyone have an idea of where to find it in the Katy/Houston area? If not is there any other acceptable glue to use on acrylic? I have an acrylic container that has a small leak at the bottom and would like to find something to seal it. I would try pvc cement but I don't want to ruin it if it doesn't work.

Thanks.

Problem is I think both have minimum purchase requirements...

What WeldOn are you looking for ?

Hobby Lobby had some acrylic solvent at one point, but didn't see it last time I checked.

I was able to find some at Hobby Lobby a few months ago. It wasn't WeldOn, but some other acrylic solvent. It was kinda thin and runny though so it wasn't ideal, but it worked ok.

weld-on

Brandon,

What you need is 3M scotch-weld acrylic adhesive. I'm trying to locate a retailer for you. This just about the best you can get for the price and it's not runny, so it's very usable. If I can't locate this, you can also use the 1 minute or the 5 minute epoxy that you buy at WalMart. The kind that has a syringe with two tubes that you squeese out then mix together. This works well. I welded an dual overflow box back together and you know how much these things weight with water in them-still together after a year. Brandon, you know my background and what I do for a living. I try to give the best advice that I can, especially when it can relate to my job. I would use the 5 minute epoxy. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

Later,
Steve

p.s. If you don't go this wkend, I'll hook you with some peps.

Hey Aggie, I just built a new Refug out of acrylic and I used this stuff called GOOP there are many version of it, but buy the one that says MARINE. It seals, bonds very fast and it is waterproof. I got mine at Home Depot on 290 and Spring Cypress for 4.95 a tube. Good Stuff..

I was reading the back of one of the goop packages a few minutes ago and it said not safe for using on things that come in contact with food etc...wondering if it is safe for an aquarium. It did look like it was a good product though.

Brandon

Thanks Steve for the peppermint shrimp hookup...hope you all have great luck.

They are CYA themselves. This stuff is rock hard in a matter of an hour. I filled mine up with water and watched it. There was nothing leaching out into the water. My reef and fish are doing fine and it has been a good 3 weeks now. Just trying help, but by all means if you dont fell good about it than do not do it..

Talk to you later,

Leon

lol....I hear ya. I didn't get to read what was in the goop so I can't comment on what could leach out but you're right it is probably perfectly fine to use. I will probably use it for another project down the road :)

I've used Goop - Marine to repair with, but I don't know about using it for building a big acrylic box. I mail ordered the acrylic cement, both the liquid and the gel.....they work great. I can't remember the company, but I did a Google search for acrylic cement, and it was one of the first ones that popped up. It cost me about 12 bucks total, I think.

 We must be neighbors........that's my favorite Home Depot, because it is rarely ever crowded.......and by now the employees know me by name.

I have bought weld-on at Regal Plastics several times when I was building sump/hood/DSB cover, etc. Am pretty sure that there is no minimum purchase; once all that I bought was a bottle of weld-on although I haven't needed anything for ~ 6 months. They also have the "applicator kit" which is basically a needle and syringe which makes it a lot easier to use the stuff neatly. Would ask Kevin (ReefALot) - an acryllic guru - for his source and other pointers. 2 cents. Steve.
