I need to epoxy some frags in my tank to my live rock. These are already on small pieces of rock. What would be a good epoxy to use? Anything from Home Depot, or do I need to get some from one of the vendors? I need it to be reef safe. Thanks, Richard.

epoxy

I have tryed Aquastick epoxy, avaiable through many vendors online, and have vowed to never use the stuff again!
It changes the surface tension of the water so much, the skimmer goes nuts for a day or two. So I just had to turn it off in the long run, and wait 2 days before it could be turned back on.
It will work pretty good underwater, but it creates other problems...

Yeah depending on how much you use it will make a skimmer go nuts for a day or so. According to Kevin Ngo (Reefalot) the epoxy contains metal filings so he doesn't use it. I have used it in my tank on a few occasions (Aquamend epoxy from Home Depot) and have not seen any negative effects. I think it is the same as the epoxy they sell at the LFS.

Not only does it stink and make the skimmer have problems, it doesn't work even half the time, in my experience. Superglue gel just can't be beat. I just put a big glop on the bottom of the piece that I'm gluing down, set it in place, and kind of smear it around to break the skin that forms on the glue when placed in water. I works pretty darn well. :)

Thanks Sherri. I have tried regular superglue before but it seems that the stuff wouldn't really stick to anything wet. I'll try the gel this time. :)

Yeah I like the gel for fragging but in order to get a rock of any decent size to stick in a tank the epoxy works best. the key to the epoxy is to let it cure a bit outside the tank then get it in all the nooks and crannys of the rocks. Hold it in place for a minute or so and it will stick great. I hate using the gel for gluing inside the tank because it takes half a tube to get a decent sized glob to work. If you don't have much to glue though the gel will work fine.

Is this aquamend stuff come in a dual syringe ?

Is it the bright blue stuff that comes in the dual syringe? I've tried using that, it doesn't seem to have much holding power on the rocks...

Surf,

No, the epoxy stuff they are talking about is the clay looking stuff. Usually has two colors rolled up into one tube. You cut off the needed amount and kneed it to mix the two colors. Then it is ready for use.

The epoxy rarely works for me and when it does it is not long term. The Super Glue gel works but be prepared to go through a ton of it.

I started using Duro quick gel from WM.
Not a bad price 2 tubes .11oz. for the $1.89
the original super glue cost twice as much.

I've seen it but every time I do see it either the tube says "Steel-filled" or is ambiguous enough to make me worry about it being reef safe. Is "aqua-mend" a brand name and if so, where can I locate it?

Gracias.

Re superglue-I've tried it and been unhappy, I'm just trying to find a method that works for me, thanks. I'm gluing rocks together around a pvc frame.

AquaMend is found at Home Depot in the epoxy/glue section. Made by Polymeric Systems Inc. UPC on back is 3822770570.

you can get a big container ~2 ounces of super glue gel at a hobby store (hobby lobby) for about 10 bucks. Easier to use then the little tubes.
