Hey there!

Ok it is time for me to but new bulbs. I have leaning toward, after some research, the 250W 14k Hamilton Mogul bulb or maybe the same but XM brand. I have also heard it mentioned that the reeflux 12k is a good one

So my question is who has the best price? :? Online or local.

I am also up for any other suggestions.

No....the only reason I use actinics on my tank is for dusk to dawn. I have them set to turn off when my halides come on and I have the 12k reeflux. I'll be switching to the 20k reeflux when it's time to replace my bulbs b/c they put out even more par than the 12k's and have a little more blue in them with a stronger actinic punch.

EVC makes a competitively priced bulb, and tested well, with regards to par output.

I found it to be the best price break between cost and performance.

You need to pair up with the ballast you intend to operate.

reef science carries them for 55 ea.

You can pick up reeflux bulbs around 62 ea, so about same cost wise

You can read more on outputs, following links:

Good luck

Yeah I was just reading the disclaimer about using magnetic ballasts with the bulbs. Mine are. Looks like I might have to look into new ballasts and swith to electronic. any suggestions? I am trying to keep the price moderate.

Coralvue ballasts are only $125ea for dimmable or $115 for regular 250w versions. You can get a dual Coralvue 250w for $190. I have the 250w dimmable and I'm very pleased. Camaroracer has the same ballasts and I'm sure he can speak to their great flexibility.

I just picked up 175w 14k hamiltons at a smoking deal from F.G. I haven't noticed an differences between manufactures, but I'm not an expert on them either. They look good and do what they need to.

Ok after looking around, and research I decided to take Shaggy's advice and try the Reef Optics. They just arrived and I plan to swap them out tonight after work. I will take pics and let you know how they do. For the price and reviews, I decided they were worth a shot. Thanks Shaggy

I STILL PLAN ON GETTING NEW BALLASTS VERY SOON. Any pros or cons about that dual Coralvue I asked about?
