I think that should do the job. Just make sure they tumble really well, and monitor your nitrate level when you first run it weekly / daily, Adjust to your needs.. GL!!

ive read that a maxi jet 1200 would be a good pump to use for this. How do i know how much i should put in to start out with, cause i believe you start out with a small amount and then slowly add more over time, right?

Yes maxijet is good, you need to add the recommended amount for your Tank size and feeding need. If you feed a lot then you need more bacterial to grow and help your skimmer produce. There also a valve adjustment to lower your output rate. GL!
