Let’s revisit Ground Probes and Stray Voltage

so let's see, the current path will be from the fault to the probe to the ground prong in the outlet - yep, I missed that, I agree that the current monitor won't catch that - so thanks. Glad I posted that. Interestingly enough, the only outlet near my tank also feeds the refrigerator, and to...

Let’s revisit Ground Probes and Stray Voltage

I picked up a ground probe one day at All about Fish when I stopped on the way home to grab some food a few years ago. Don't recall the brand. I plug it into a kasa bar with energy monitoring - I think I should be able to see current if there is any - but so far, so good. In theory, I could...

    Fish Sitting

My main advice is, whatever automation you have or water changes you care to make, go on vacation from your system at least a day in advance. Last minute changes have high potential for unintended consequences.

When you forget to turn off your RO unit

That held a LOT more water than I expected it would.

    Livestock Achilles and fish list

I don't see hours posted - are you mostly mail order and appointment, or do you have shop hours? (or is that an "after the honeymoon" kind of thing - congrats!)

    Best heater?

I have the bayite. It keeps it's settings. I've had it 3 years. I did cover the probe, I think with heat shrink tubing and RTV on the end. I did get flaky after a year - the probe jack (on the probe itself) was the issue - I reterminated that and it's been fine since.

    Macroalgae

Looking for some interesting macroalgae. At least gracillaria, but a calcified algae would be cool. Not looking for chaeto, but would probably get some for my holding tank if that's all i can find. Anyone know if any lfs have some? Im a south sider in league city, but will find my self...

    T5 Bulb LED Replacement?

my garage, master closet x2, and laundry room have 4 ft fixtures. Trash service technically won't accept 4ft tubes, so I started swapping them out as bulbs failed rather than buy new bulbs. The first was a direct wire I bought at Lowes around the corner. It comes right on and is bright, but...

    Leaching…

i used colored PVC, but it isn't available in as many fittings - so I have a few under-the-waterline pieces painted with krylon fusion. Been a year, still look fine, at least where it isn't coated in coralline. I think leaching issues with dried paint and not likley to cause problems. Plywood...

    Niger Trigger Help

gotta participate in this southside based thread..... I have a hypotheses on seeded sponges based on my current QT experience. They'll get some bacteria in an established DT - but won't be heavily populated like you need for a standalone filter in your QT. I had some sponges floating in my...

    new pincushion - lazy!

With a few exceptions, I find their supply prices to be on par with everyone else, and they have a pretty good reward system. The stuff I've had them special order for me (both "gear" and "supplies") has been the same price as I can find it online before the reward, but I don't worry about it...

    new pincushion - lazy!

I've never had a fish mailed. I might, nothing against online vendors, and I think Dr Reef is supposed to be pretty good, but I like going to the LFS, so I support them. And I'm more of a gatherer for my tank, I'm not trying to have it all set up at once - so I'm not highly motivated to mail...

    new pincushion - lazy!

was at a League City LFS this weekend to grab a new heater for my QT, and they had some red pincushions that caught my eye. I lost a tuxedo a while back, and had been on the lookout for a halloween, but this nice red pincushion seemed like a good addition. So far, it's moved a bit up the...

    coralline mineral fate?

what happens with the minerals that scatter when I scrape coralline algae off my glass? I expect they are not soluble in any real amount in an aquarium environment, and just become particulate in the sand or get filtered out by a sock, depending on your setup. But perhaps the magnesium...

    Aliens took my chromis

I had my tank wrapped during the freeze. I am treating with fluconazole, and I do have some lingering cyano on the back wall I can't quite shake. I have one unnamed zoa that came as a hitchhiker over a year ago that would surge and fade for reasons unknown to me, and it seems like this past...

    hair algae vs cyano

I don't see any bryopsis left. Actually, I see no green algae at all. I definitely need to remove some detritus this weekend - and I'll probably plug my ATS back in, but leave the skimmer in recirc a bit longer. I am not sure when I am "done" and should put the skimmer back to export or a...

    hair algae vs cyano

fluconazole is starting to work - bryopsis is shrinking. I did take my ATS off-line, and cleaned it off / sanitized it. I think I'll put it back on, but leave the lights off this week. it will be part of the treated loop. It had been growing mostly GHA, but that last time - lots of stiff...

    Freezing temperature and storage tanks?

on a related topic - it occurred to me my old truck might not have enough antifreeze (I've topped it off with water if needed), and frankly, I don't recall whether it has ethlyene or propylene glycol, so I can't rely on my old antifreeze tester. I checked to see if I could use my refractometer...

    Freezing temperature and storage tanks?

do your storage tanks have piping attached? A drain valve? That's a potential weak point. When I lived in IN, lots of folks in my neighborhood had above ground pools - they'd just lower the level in winter and let them freeze. I had a tank in an unheated room, and in cold snap, I found my...
