No joke? It’s strange seeing her referenced in recent AEFW research videos. Strange to imagine she’s completely out.she completely quit the hobby if I recall correctly.
Yeah so sad when I found out... loved going to his house weekly. Crazy to watch him just dump baked baking soda directly into his tank. He ended up taking the skimmer and reactors off after a while... was so weird but so many people are doing the same all of a sudden now. ( no skimmer, no reactor)Man.. I remember shane and quoc. I didn’t know about quoc though. Sorry to hear that.
Who’s doing no skimmer and why? It would be better just to run it without a cup. A slimmer helps with ORP, or the ability of your system to “digest” or “breakdown” organic compounds.Yeah so sad when I found out... loved going to his house weekly. I’ve ran Nanos with hob filters converted to turf scrubbers before. Pretty cool stuff. Last one I ran was in Korea. My more recent nanos just ran on water changes and a little skimmer.I found that really interesting in Pico tanks. Even small nanos. They often run with nothing but hob filter and a decent light. I guess water changes are more frequent but easier because you don’t need much. I am always looking to see what gear I can add next.
Les is still around but I don’t see him on the forum so much. It’s been a minute since I talked to him. I need to shoot him a text and see if Ed still alive hahaI agree with Cody. The OGs I remember are gone. When I started in 2002, MARSH was easy to find. Kevin Ngo, Leslea Hoffpauir and many others were a plethora of information and the forum was as addictive as the hobby. I have a ridiculous amount of books, including Eric Borneman’s. I bought my first tank off the forum. My job demands increased and I began fading out of the hobby right before the transformation of MARSH. Sadly, I’ve only been able to keep up with Leslea. I wish I could remember everyone we met at frag swaps, dike trips, etc. Fun times. Good people.
I found MARSH a couple years ago when I got back in the hobby. You guys are great and the equipment has evolved, but the price increases are mind blowing. Thanks for bridging the gap for me. I retired early and got back into the hobby with a nano. Now that I have the time and a little less $, I don’t see my 100G reef returning. I browse Facebook, but haven’t found a local group as helpful as MARSH. I agree that Instagram and TikTok aren’t conducive to someone learning about the hobby.
I see a few pre-transition MARSHians here, but are any other old MARSH people lurking? Retirement, hurricanes, floods, prices and moves thinned us out. Just curious.
What year did it start?I was there in the beginning. Was about 15 at the first few meetings. I believe James had one of the first meetings at his house. Frank Marini worked with me at MD Anderson. He worked in the labs and was the first one to breed Bangaii Cardinals. He was selling them all over town. Kat who I met a few years later had bought 3 of my elegances from me and was one of her favorite corals until she brought home a different elegance from a local fish store and killed them all. Eric, who was a little crazy, did a study on elegances and said that different types have some kind of bacteria that could kill each other if in the same tank. I didn't believe him till Kat lost all hers. Interesting group back then. The club seemed to kinda flounder after the first year and I lost touch with the group. I jumped back in a few years later after reading a post about one of my elegances from I think Markie B. Definitely like the way the group has run for the last 10 years or so and proud to be a part of it.
