Wow, that's beautiful - great work so far.

I have to say though, that's a lot of work for a 75G tank. You could upsize your tank later to a 4' 120 or even go to a 6' tank without much extra work or expense. Your fishroom looks pretty expandable to me. Good stuff.

Cheers

Thanks james, this tank has been getting smaller and smaller everytime I look at it lol... I dont doubt for a second that I will be moving to the 120 within a couple of years. The issue is that I am in an area where I am not necessarily comfortable with my daughter going to high school, so the possibility of us moving to a nicer area is prevalent within the next 5 years or so. When the time comes I will weigh the odds of it being worthwhile to upgrade the inwall here or not. However it will be a stunning 75g display none the less once I catch on to everything. (My wife will make sure of it or it will no longer remain in our house... lol! 8))

bbpetfish on 1960 has oolitic sand, the dry type. you will have to do a lot of rinsing.

Blah.... I was just over there earlier too... :(

Update...

Obviously the tank didnt go in Thursday, but here is pics of the progress.

Bent the overflow baffles with the orange mini torch you see in the picture. Only took about 2 mins of heating for the acrylic to fold like paper. I didnt end up with any bubbling or heat blemishes until I heated the acrylic the second time to square up the bends. I know I should have done that the first time but it was dark and I was tired. lol ;).

Cut the boxes to fit. Decided on 9"x4" but my hand BARELY fits in to do plumbing. I gave myself alot more room by turning the overflow pipes around to face the back tank wall as you see in the pics. Otherwise I would have needed 4" of clearance just for the plumbing to fit. Cut all my pipe to fit for the inside of the tank and made a cutout for the return piping. All put together Ill have to admit... Its growing on me. ;)

Got my order from petmountain in today... 2 koralia evo 750s and via aqua 300w ti heater. Got em for a steal.
tankbuild042.jpg

Here is my water storage solution. 2 kingsford charcoal caddys from home depot. $12.00 ea. Sealed tops; 10g ea. Will be used to hold kalk top off and ro/di. I will probably get a 20g trash can for mixing SW, and have it outside the room.

Finally had my first run in with aptasia. Had 2! used aptasia-X, now I have 6! Was gonna try lemon juice but I don't want to end up with twelve. I WOULD just pull the rock and let it die, but it has my war coral on it.

Oh yeah! Everything is looking good!!!!!! I have the Evo 1400's and love them, I also run that titanium heater and have been very pleased with it. I love the fact that I have a visual indicator (red light on control unit) to tell me if the heater is on, or even worse... stuck on.

I see Jaime offered his opinion of the charcoal caddy! I just set mine up last week and haven't had to top off since! I don't see how I lived without this thing.

I'm drunk and tired... GOODNIGHT!

Actually I didnt know anything about Jamie using them at first. I was looking for small trashcans that would fit in the small area I have designated for storage and eventually settled on some 13g trashcans that I would have to modify. Cliner found these at home depot and told me about them and eventually he remembered seeing them at Jamie's. They will work perfect.

Aiptasia... It's what's for dinner. Laughing

SWEET!!! thats just what I need... lol So do I kill that rock and put it in dry after scrubbing? How do you recommend handling the aiptasia before I put the all of the rock in the tank?

Will it spread and outbreak in my tank if I dont handle it before hand?

I guess this is where things start to get a bit tricky... Construction and custom building is my forte already being a custom audio video and security tech, but I will have a slightly larger learning curve when it comes to keeping the reef. I hope I can catch on quickly.

I had a couple of aiptasias from some corals I got. They moved to the rock by where I placed the coral. What I did was remove the rock and cut off the piece of the rock that it was attached to, making sure to not disturb it. Got rid of them both and put the rocks back in place, no problems.

Good luck with it.

Well, I believe I am as prepared as I am going to get, so I will wake up early and start the process of putting the tank in and getting everything sealed up before the end of the day. Here is pics of today's handywork.

Went back to HD for the 5,000,000th time and and picked up an exterior door jamb kit. I already had a door that was meant for the remodel but didnt fit so i just cut the jamb to size and threw everything in. Came out pretty good.

My handy little finish nailer made the install super ez.
tankbuild058.jpg

This was the beginning stages of my false rock background. Sheet of 1/2" squares light diffuser. Beveled and sanded the edges etc.
tankbuild059.jpg

This is the end product after tie wrapping a few pieces of dry rock to the light diffuser and spraying the foam. I threw a couple shelves in to place corals on or whatever the use may be... aesthetics if nothing else cuz they look pretty cool.

tankbuild070.jpg

tankbuild071.jpg

I used this foam from home depot. 13.00 a can. I used 3 cans on about 28"x20" area.
tankbuild069.jpg

Here it is in the tank for a test fit... Fits like a glove. :)

Here is the back view. Cut down the overflow strainers and lowered the level in the overflows by an inch or so after I took this pic.
tankbuild067.jpg

Got this refractometer off of ebay for 24.00 and, after calibration, matches salinity with cliner's on the dot. I am satisfied.

That's not aptasia, you need to get a better pic of the exoskeleton it grows from. Don't kill it yet.

Way to go Cliner - you are the only one that correctly deduced that those animals are NOT aiptasia - they are called "cup coral" (I know, kind of generic name) and are pretty common on caribbean live rock. I can't remember the scientific name, but it will come to me after a few cups of coffee.

Cliner and James are truly onto something there. I believe it is a Phyllangia americana. I could be wrong but after spending many years living in Fort Lauderdale and spending as much time as I could on the reef, I believe that is what it is.
