How full is the tank usually?

They told me for safety reasons only 80%…that can’t be right.

Usually a home brew place won’t fill to full… they are using K-bottles and so they’re only transferring pressure. While K bottles will probably be charged to a higher initial pressure (2400psi service pressure) than a 10 or 20lb tank you’re using, you’re fighting both any depletion already used up in the K bottle and the ideal gas law, so you may only get 50-80% fill from that. I would go to a gas supply store that has a compressor (there was one at 517 and 146 in texas city that I would frequent), and get a full 10 lbs each time. At the home brew place that has since shut down I was lucky to get 5 lbs.

I get why folks want food grade, but it’s not necessary. You’ll be completely fine with welding gas complaint CO2 (or whatever they call it).

Well I called like 6 industrial places and all they did was exchanges. So I was happy to find one that refilled. Co2 hard to find theses days anyways.
Carbonics fills the tanks and certifies them. I buy my CO2 and beer gas for our kegerator from them. Any brew shop should be able to fill CO2, but they won’t get it full. A trick when you’re having them fill it is to freeze the tank prior to taking it in. The colder the tank is the more CO2 that the brewing store will be able to get into it. All industrial gas suppliers I’ve been to do exchanges like you said, but when you do that you don’t need to worry about the tank being out of certification. The downside is the tanks are U-G-L-Y. Lol! That’s why we have our tanks filled and certified. They’re nice aluminum tanks.

Agreed. That’s nonsense. A 10lb tank can fill to 10lbs of CO2 no problem.
80% is a standard practice for any gas cylinder, because if it’s too full the pressure will increase a lot as the temperature increases. This is because the dead volume at the top of the cylinder is so small that it doesn’t allow for expansion of the gas. So if they filled it to 100% and then you put it in the trunk of your car and went shopping it would increase in pressure and possibly exceed the pressure of the relief valve.

I just exchange at Airgas aka Linde. That way I don’t ever have to pay for a tank out of certification dates. Conroe welding supplies refills tanks for me but they are almost double what it costs me to exchange

I'm a bit far away from H-Town, but I can fill Co2 bottles in College Station. We are going to be a bit more expensive, roughly $5.00 a pound.

In the matter of filling to capacity, we can certainly fill a 10lb cylinder with 10lbs of Co2. The problem that we have right now during this time of the year is it is difficult to fill to capacity due to the heat. Our Co2 pump is outside and the bottles get very warm when filling. When the temperature of the bottle goes up, its much harder to fill the bottles full. I've had to put bags on bottles while filling to get them to fill full.

PM me if your interested.
