OK...so, here's the new thread for what we started talking about in the wrong thread...


this is how it started:

i had the biggest post ever known to mankind...and notepad zapped it...

i like this idea...i wouldn't be able to take too much part in it bout i'd definately help with setup and everything...maybe with zoas or something that grows fast...i have to move every 4 years welcome to military life...

question is which way would we go about it...if i'm reading correctly there's a few different ways of doing this...

1. one person is the "holder" where the frag tanks will be set up...
A. People donate frags to get started
B. If you want a frag you "request" it and when you go pickup you donate one of your own.
C. when the frag you "requested" grows enough to be fragged you do so, and donate at least 1 frag back to the "holder" and the rest to other members
D. There would be some sort of "qualification" process to get a frag from the tank...

2. There is no "holder"
A. people donate frags to each other
B. each frag grows and then is fragged again and donated to more people.




either way, there's a sub-forum and "official" documentation of the family tree for each coral....

AND...a few months down the road EVERYONE would need to learn how to use photobucket (or similar photo hosting website) to load pics or we're gonna have a ton of threads that are "full" of pics...

P.S. BoD seemed to have some reservations about this before...

Llama, Gabe_j, and Ostentum all expressed interest initially...and it kept growing...

the original proposal:

i think we'd first need to establish a "cost per year" of running another tank

seems to me 75 gallons is the going size on spare tanks people have sitting around collecting dust...

my proposal:

we pick the "caretaker" and figure out how much it would cost to get the system up and running...

then we do some calculations on total amount it would cost to run this tank for a year...

we start with one tank...one 75 gallon tank and run it..i have some stuff i can donate, a couple small frags that could be thrown in...

all members participating in this event would be responsible for donating a predetermined amount of money, it would be small, like $5 added to your membership fees, if we have enough people (thus the need for yearly operating costs of the caretakers tank) in order to be a memeber of the sub-club...the money donated would be used for supplies only (salt, new test kits, new bulbs, water, etc..) and any leftover (after accumulating an "oh #!@$%" buffer of course) could be used to purchase a coral frag voted on by the sub-club members...

it starts with a couple small frags and every time you take one to grow (if you're a designated "grower") you donate a new frag of your own...always returning a frag of what you grew to the subclub after it grows and is fragged...


i know people are hesitant because there's a bunch of people out there that will rip you off every chance they get...but i'm of the firm belief that everyone on the planet can screw me over ONCE...i don't see this being an "entire club" operation simply because of the risk involved...



the sharing of information would be my primary purpose for joining this operation...i think it's brilliant...

i think thats a pretty safe idea there ed, it cover the maintaince and as you put it the OH !@#$ buffer which everyone needs to have just incase. lol

the only down side i could see and its not really a downside would be that this should start slowly. i mean like 4 or 5 people at first.

then...

and mabe have it set up so we have growers/caretakers all over town and come time to have a big frag swap, all the participants can bring new frags to contribute across the city so people don't have to make the drive across town

lol...lets start it small...like you said, maybe 4 or 5 people...i vote we do it on that level to start out and yeah, open it up to other group members after it's going...the cost would be bigger for that first 5 or so people though...which i don't mind...i'm single, and live alone ...

besides that, everyone that seems to be willing to jump in head first lives like within 20 minutes of each other...i'm down!

as the BoD has said on multiple occasions we dont' need them to start something so i say we start it...maybe they can give us a sub-forum...that'd be not only a great way for us to communicate but also so everyone else can see what we're doing and we have an unparalleled level of transparency...

and once we've grown and seen results that all the original members are benifiting from then open it up to another group of members.

i agree...we'll have growers grow and when it's all ready to frag we can say "who wants in" and give a frag to the new members when they sign up...i dont think it's a good idea to let everyone grow right off the bat...we'd have to come up with some qualification process...don't want people killing corals we're all invested in...

picture it this way...the people that aren't growers would be getting 4-5 frags for $5...

then, slowly and surely we can add more growers...

and have it grow as the months go by so its not a huge amount of faith we would all have to put in one or 2 growers holding alot of peoples extra corals. kind of a minimizing possible colateral damage to the collective.

I'd like to get in on this. I do have a PM skimmer sitting in the garage if needed.

I have a 36" t5 Nova extreme pro...I can lend out for a year or so.

Very nice guys, let me get this straight. This is more of a frag pool now. If so I would suggest starting up your own thread since the idea has deviated from the original plan. Just for respect to the op and the members of the pay it forward plan.

Seems like ideas are flying back and forth. I commend you guys. But everything sounds good on paper, I would imagine in practice it would be extremely harder.

Like everything, the good things always takes time. The returns on the investment is very small. As everyone knows, frags take a while to grow Into something that's fraggable. The members will have had to invest for a while before getting any kinda sizable return of investment.

Not to mention those offering equiptment might as donate it. The wear and tear of extra use could eventually destroy it. They must be willing to let it go.

This new plan, is a lot more complicated that the original pay it forward plan. The pif plan did not need equipment because the tank was already provided by the user. This one has membership cost, caretaker, extra tank cost. Power, possibly supplements if enough Sps is involved. I'd hate to even mention what if disater strikes. Heater blew up. Tank cracked and broke while caretaker was at work. We've all had it before, most of the time it's ok. Sometimes you lose a few, but do you trust the caretaker enough? Sometimes live happens. It's tending to your own personal frag tank at times. Much less a community tank.

Most of use do not make any money back from this hobby. If we do, it's no where near the price we have invested. We take the lost, because it's a hobby and we have the enjoyment of having the ocean in our homes. This new plan requires you to possibly invest and possibly be on the losing end. Returns will be slow esp dealing with frags. I would like to ask the new members what exactly are they expecting out of this venture.

here we are...i guess the first thing we need, again, is someone who can take care of the "mother-tank"

i noticed you suggested to include this in your marsh membership. which could imply that marsh was ok with this. and i don't think should any event occur that marsh be as affiliated directly so as to eliminate the liability from marsh. that sounds really confusing... i don't think we should have marsh help this out other than have a forum or to allow this thread. other than that we should keep it between the acting members involved and thats it. if you join us thats all on you. if theres loss oh well theres loss. we can do everything in our power for everything to be perfect but there are no promise that nothing would, could or will ever happen thats negative. sh!t happens sometimes and you gotta deal with it. lol.

i believe, what he's talking about, in it's purest, simplest form is from tempSET's (just realized today it's tempSET...can't think how many time's ive written "tempest") original thread...

...this plan would not include expecting anything in return.

The entire definition of pay it forward is giving something away with no expectation of something in return.

A proper description of this would be as follows:

1. Original coral colony owner would frag his/her colony and give it freely to ANY participating member of MARSH. this would be fully documented & publicly announced.

2. Once the person who RECEIVED the coral has grown it enough, they pass the VERY SAME CORAL onto someone else to do the same thing.

so he GIVES YOU A CORAL, you grow it...then GIVE IT TO SOMEONE ELSE

Ok so I've got 2 takers each receiving a 2headed frag of my Lavender acans.

@ Ed, I purposefully kept my offer in the thread because I wanted those who followed this idea this far got thier chance at taking up my offer. If you'd like a frag too your more than welcome I've got ALOT of these acans. But I want to keep a sizable chunk to frag in the future.

So as of right now I've got RHG69 and Tmgrash down for a frag. After the holidays ofcourse i'm sure you guys are as busy as I am.
