Got some xenia about three weeks ago from aqua-nut, thanks Randall. This stuff is like bamboo, growing like a weed. How do you go about fragging this stuff? Do you just whack away with a razor blade at the base? I have one colony that split into two separate colonies, so that's easy. Can you frag a larger colony into several pieces?

Thanks for your help. :)

Theres a great section on fragging xenia at www.garf.org. When there site is back up Ill post a link to it. Basically they use scissors to cut it and secure it live rock with netting.

Thanks

Thanks Shane, I love the garf site, good info there. When I got my frags from Randall, I just squished them in some holes in the LR and they took hold, and took off. I don't know if I got lucky or if Randall's frags were "Super Xenia".

Jim,

Usually what I do is put a small rock in the middle of the Xenia patch or on top of the stalk, in a few days it will attach to the new rock and cut it away from the parent. No netting needed.

I watched the videos on GARF and then decided if it's really like a weed, you don't have to be careful with it...

So, I just tear a hunk off a rock or use a pair of stainless steel scissors to cut it near the base and then shove the piece between two other rocks. Now I just throw it in my sump to sell!

If you're trying to get it to grow on rubble, you could always **lightly** (not tightly) fix it to a rock with some string. Rubber bands are too tight, I've found.

i actually got some of the white xenia to attach to rocks by using a rubber band, the thing is though i must have done it exactly right where the xenia could not blow away but it was still secure.

now its gone and grown 3 stalks.

I agree with polecat when he says that aqua-nut's xenias are invicible xenias. I placed mine between two rocks and they atteched in a matter of days. Now They are branching out and I have 4 branches when I started with only 2. They are so pretty. I just love how they open and close. :D

Had a little time on my hands this afternoon. Went to Fishland and bought a cool purple/green shroom rock, got a single flourescent green shroom on a piece of rubble for free, and picked up a sack of rubble to start the xenia fragging. Came home, completely rearranged my tank and decided to start in on the weed, errr xenia.

After watching the GARF video, and wondering aloud to no one in particular, I decided that I could do this. Attacking the smaller of my two rapidly expanding colonies, I immediately stripped them from their perches. Using sharp scissors, with the moral support of Farouk (cat), I began. Stuff cuts easily enough and soon I had ten of what was once two. Wife had some bridal veil/tool?sp, so I tried that with the first five and affixed them (ala GARF) to the various pieces of rubble that I brought home. They looked kinda squished, so for the next five I decided to go with the "squish and bind" method using rubberbands. "Squish and bind" is just like it sounds. Take a frag, squish it into a hole in a piece of rubble, then put a rubber band around it to hold it in place. (Try not to cut it in half with the rubber band, just tight enough to hold it in place)

Voila, done. Bud Light time. Update in the morning.

Mongoose.
