I was in Galveston yesterday doing some wade fishing at San Louis Pass. There was a lot of sea weed washing up on the beech and I had had success before finding unusual creatures. I began to shake the sea weed in a bucket and found several pipe fish, shrimp, crabs, etc... I also found some very unusual fish. There were several of them ranging in size from 1/2"-2". They blended in very well with the sea weed and had leafy-spiny type fins. They look very similar to a lion fish of some sort. Maybe some type of scorpian or angler fish. I was careful not to handle these fish. I am sorry I do not have a picture. Does anyone know what this might be and are they venomous? Would I be able to put the pipe fish I found in my seahorse tank or would these wild fish be a bad idea? Can I safely feed the smaller shrimp to my sea horses? The shrimp are brown and may be grass shrimp. Thanks.

They are neat fish.

You can put the pipefish in with seahorses. They are in the same family, only they are more aggressive eaters.

Yes, that's the one for sure. Do you have one right now, and if so what are the other inhabitants in the tank. Can you tell me more about them-eating, etc... Can they live in a reef? Thanks again

I have one. I wouldn't put in my reef. Ive only had hum since last saturday, but he'll eat anything the same size as him or smaller. I feed mine ghost shrimp and feeder goldfish. Dont feed it more than twice a week, they will eat more than they can handle.

Yes the pipefish would be safe with your horses. They are probably sargassum pipefish. The shrimps and crabs are most likely sargassum shrimp and sargassum crabs. The fish you caught is called a sargassum anglerfish Histrio histrio. It is a voracious eater and will eat anything that can fit into its mouth. I would not put it in a reef. The seaweed you had there is called sargassum. It's a floating algae that comes from the Sargasso sea. Any more ???'s just ask.

Karen and Karen ordered pipefish with their dwarf seahorses, and their pipefish ate their seahorse fry. :( I have four of the Galveston pipefish but they are in their own tank and are doing very well eating phyto-enriched brine shrimp. Thankfully, Gin_Tseng just came by and took the remaining two anglers and half a dozen very small, very fast-swimming fish. The anglers ate all those puffers and one of their own!

i'll take one of those anglers if anyone wants to get rid of one. i would prefer one that is small (dime size) due to the tank it will be going in right now. and i would love a pipefish for my reef tank. just please remember that i am not rich and that i am trying to get through college right now.

Why is the sky blue? :?

Because of the refraction/reflection of sunlight off of water vapor.(something to that nature, can't remember exactly) :D

A dime size one would be really hard to feed. Remember they like live food and finding dime size live food owuld be a problem.

In this first pic I will say the longer fish is a glass minnow. The shorter one is just a minnow.

The second pic looks to be a type of trigger. Not sure though.

I think the your image didn't work because of the space between the first and your link-just an FYI
I think the second fish is a File fish.
