I have extra tanks you can borrow if you need them please do not use copper in them though.

Just curious - is copper that hard to get out of a tank? I used my 90 cube as a QT and now you have me worried.

Also, I use a product called Coppersafe, which says it treats the water for one month. Does anyone know what that means - are there forms of copper that break down after a while?

I've heard it both ways frank. Some say you can't ever get it all out of a system. Then others say that's not true. I really don't know. If the animals in the tank are doing ok, I'd just not worry to much about it. If you did have issues, be sure to document your findings.

I'd run that question by Farley, and see what he says. Let me know...I'm very curious.

Exactly my thoughts. I simply don't want to run the risk.

I recently did some research on that exact subject because a bought a reef tank from someone that had run copper in it as a fish only tank. No one thinks the glass absorbs the copper but some feel like the silicone seams will absorb the copper and slowly leach it back out over time.

I found plenty of threads where guys made a reef tank out of a tank that had copper in it in the past and I did not find a single thread where somebody said it caused a problem. This is for the glass tank now and not rock, sand, etc. I went ahead and made the purchase and will see for myself in the future. But I'm not worried about it. I found no substantiated evidence that it would cause a problem. Mostly just speculation.

I remember a LFS one time that apparently had an angry customer. The guy brought some copper in something and squirted it into all their systems. It killed thousands of $$ in coral.

i remembered them saying that all the systems were fine after they cleaned them out and had no issues later on. They were saying the copper leeching into the silicone and plumbing was a myth.

You can probably google that a find the story.

Come to think of it, my 20g QT has had copper, and since then I had an Acro in it for about a month, so I don't think I will worry too much.

Thanks for all the advise , I did loose one of the Damsels today , but the others all ate when I feed them with no issues , the white spots on the hippo tang are a lot less after one day and half , the others all seem fine , my Naso looks a little stressed but ate very well , I am using a product called copper band , going to do a fifty percent WC tomorrow afternoon. Has any one ever one one of those little in tan UV sterilizes in there QT , wondering if that one make a difference.

You don't need it....you will outrun the life cycle with transfers. ICH only stays on the fish for 3-7 days. Transferring every 72 hours or 3 days will out run them if you do 4 transfers. Really only takes 3, but the 4th is a safety net.

Or you can live on the wild side like me and trust the research we currently have and know that if you transfer on day 8 while running theraputic level of copper or CP for those 8 days....by all current studies done....The fish should be free of all ICH and Velvet parasites. Then do a 4 week non-medicated observation period to make sure. 4 weeks is the longest time know for ICH or Velvet to have unseen symptoms. So if the treatment didn't work, you will be able to see the fish become reinfected.
