After a ~6 year hiatus from reefing, I got back into it this February. I bought a tank off Craigslist, and have been hooked ever since. You can read about the first tank here.

So in March, I decided that I really wanted a rimless tank. I had never seen one before I got back into reefing this year, and I knew immediately that I wanted one. After a bunch of thinking & planning & scheming & re-planning, I ordered the tank from Glasscages. It showed up at the end of March, along with the stand. I spent the next two months accumulating equipment and procrastinating.

Over the last two weeks, I finally got a bit of free time to mostly finish the build, and I started the cycle tonight.

Equipment list
48x24x16 rimless tank w/ Starphire on the front & sides. Center rear overflow.
Glasscages stand
36"x16"x16" acrylic sump
2x Maxspect G2 110W LED fixtures
2x MP40w ES
SWC Xtreme 160 Protein Skimmer
Tunze Silence 1073.04 return pump

I have everything that could leak in the tank or sump, and I hard-plumbed both the return & the drain. The drain is 1.5" PVC w/ a home-built Durso, and the return is 3/4" PVC with a single piece of loc-line back into the tank. 3/4" was easiest to mate to the pump & loc-line & I didn't see much reason to change - the drain is a 1" bulkhead though. I also simply hung the lights from the ceiling - the Maxspect fixtures come with decently nice hardware for a hanging installation. I installed an 8-way DJ switch and a 12V DC fan (soldered to a 9V power brick) in the stand. The DJ switch is great, and the fan was needed as a vent because the entire stand is enclosed.

I picked up 60 lbs of live rock from FJW tonight. Dennis is a great guy to deal with & always has good advice. Great guy - if you haven't gone to see him, you should. I also "cooked" about 20 lbs of rock for 2 months from my other tank - that is in the refugium now. I haven't done any rock scaping; I'll get around to that when the cycle is close to done. Oh, and I used about 1.5" of Caribsea Reef-Grade sand in the display and about 3" in the refugium.

Without further ado, here are some crappy pictures.

Tank + stand + sump, with just the drain plumbed & the Durso installed.

Durso, painted with Krylon black. Great stuff!

Drain plumbing, as well as where the return hooks up. Glad I knew enough to use unions - I think cliner first recommended that to me, good advice.

And here is where I forgot to keep taking pictures...

Here's the tank as it stands now. Water is still cloudy - I rinsed the heck out of the sand, but apparently not enough.

Thanks everyone ... I will put up some more pictures in a bit.

R-BallJunkie, the LED lights are slick. Very little heat, and I get great coverage with the 2 units (and you get a good shimmer, unlike with T5's). I haven't actually grown anything under them yet though, so I can't comment on that. I like the color of the 110's I have, but they probably don't put out enough light for a much deeper tank. Over my 75 (5" deeper), the bottom is pretty dim.

edit: Adding pictures. These are unedited, they colors aren't really right, but you get the idea. The water is cloudy because I was messing with the rocks. Not sure if I'll leave it like this but it'll do for now.

From the front.

View from the front door upon entering the house. The tank is in my office, just off the main entrance.

Nice setup. I'm looking forward to seeing it stocked and the results with the LED's. What are you plans for stocking?

Nice work, very clean look.

I think it'll work out - there is a bit flat area that will work great for frag plugs. Thinking about drilling some holes in the rock to hold frags. Anyone know what size drill bit would work the best?

I like the right side of the structure, think I have a good place to put my big orange monticap. I want one more L-shaped rock to build out the structure on the back left some. I'll post some more pictures tomorrow when I get home - I'm visiting family in Katy right now.

I haven't made up my mind yet. I know I want to migrate the big monticap, zoas and candy canes from my current tank. I also have a Frogspawn, a pink monti with purple polyp frag, and a green monti frag that will make the new tank. I will probably do some sort of branching SPS and at least one more flavor of LPS; maybe a hammer. My open brain will probably migrate to the new tank as well. Not sure about the big galaxea - that rock has a bunch of HA on it still. This is all still up in the air though.

I have always wanted a carpet anemone but I'm undecided. I may not have enough sand in the tank. I do have a GBTA that may make the trip.

I know I will move the Powder Blue Tang & the Occelaris Clown. I want a Flameback Pygmy Angel and I have been thinking about a small Purple Tang. I'll keep the tank to 4 or maybe, maybe 5 fish. If I added a 5th fish, I may go for a clown pair & leave the Occelaris in the current tank.

Couple of new pictures. I'd love ideas to improve the rock scape, especially the left side.

I agree - you can get some verticallity but uprighting some of the rocks. If they aren't stable, you can use big black cable ties to help hold them. The cable ties will be covered w/ corraline in 2 weeks :) Another alternative is to get get a concrete/tile drill bit and drill holes through the rock, then run acrylic rods through the holes to stabilize things.

Cheers
James
