Hopefully, this is the first in a ONE part series of articles that I will ever have to write. I finally got the time (and to a good place) with my recent problems to document up what happened to me. It's a good read (I think), and there are pictures.

I hope that everyone can learn from my mistakes, and that absolutely NO ONE has to repeat them.

Whoa, glad it all worked out great for you in the end.

One question though, Why did you go to a 3 Stooges hospital?

Too bad the weren't capable (read competent enough) of culturing the bug. I would really like to know what got ahold of you. Glad you got it under control though.

It depends on what it was, but culturing isn't that tough. If I had a sample and it was put into a cryo vial quick enough, I look into the needs of the culturing media based on the organism if it can be identified under the microscope. It is obvious that the bug was able to live on the tissue so a blood agar mix may be used to grow.

Unfortunately, doctors now a days don't try to figure it out before administiring antibiotics whether it be because they don't/can't spend the money on lab work, or they don't have the time, as it was in this case. They just pick what works for a broad spectrum of things and cross their fingers. Why do think that microbial resistance is rampant?

That's kind of scary. I'm going to buy gloves now. I think over time a lot of us get too comfortable in our tanks. There are some scary diseases and infections in the oceans and ponds (esp. the flesh eating bacteria). Glad you were able to keep your finger and hand. Thanks for posting that to remind us all to wear gloves.

Bump.... a LOT of people have asked me why I'm getting rid of my tank. This should explain a lot of it. PErhaps, Mods, this could be added to the library and a sticky link be posted. I think (personally) that it's valuable information that everyone should know for their safety and well-being.

Hey Matt, when we click on the original link posted above we get a "File Not Found on this Server" message.

Can you repost for those who missed it the first time around?

Hopefully when we do some changes on the site, we can allow for more additions of articles like this.
