So I have been reading about Jen’s and Meldoye’s adventures with dwarf seahorses and then I hear that John is also keeping them, I had to give it a try. To be honest I have wanted seahorses since I was kid well today I finnaly took the plunge. Not dwarves mind you, they, like most things tiny seem far too delicate for me to handle. So today I made a trip down to TFD and got myself a 25 gallon tank with all the trimmings.

I will be adding an AC 500 fuge converstion but I felt I still needed a canister filter so Kevin showed me this neat little sucker called a rena xP1 it comes with every attachment under the sun including a spray bar return which was perfect for what I feel I needed for the seahorses. If this sucker works half as good as it looks it will be fantastic. So after two back breaking trips to Krogers to fill up my three seven gallon jugs (I have got to get me an RO unit), everything is up and running. Hopefully I will be adding some macro and a few snails in a week or so as I prepare to dive into wonderful world of ponies.

looks like you are off to a good start....... Exotic Aquatics has some cool macro that you can grow in the tank. You will need to add some thing that the horses can grab a hold too. You will love keeping horses as the are soo cool to watch

A week ago I added 6 ghost shrimp, 2 cerith, and a zebra turbo snail, everyone is still accounted for and everything has stabilized. I still need to find a better light for the HOB fuge though. Suggestions anyone?

So Sunday I added 3 yellow H.Redi females (I had read that males like harems, who'd a guessed right?). They are doing quite well, they even ate for me the first night :). I will however be adding a feeding station as the little ghost shrimp are laying on their backs holding their stomachs. Here's a couple of shots of the girls.

Hopefully I will be able to add a male in a week or two.

looks good!

hotwater9 your tank looks great too. hey i was wondering, i read you shouldn't put crab/shrimp with seahorses because they're aggressive to the seahorse. well as far as the substrate, what can you put then. and what do you mix as far as fish etc.? thanks

hotwater9, Tank looks nice good luck

Isis, I have not ordered them yet the ones I am looking at need a little more to grow so that they can handle the stress of shipping. I have noticed that time is moving very, very slowly in that department :(.

On another note today I lost one of my girls. I purchased the first three (I added a male about a month ago) all at the same time from the same place. Two of the three have grown quite a bit at least doubling in size while she remained almost as small as when I first got her. I removed the fuge from the back of the tank Sunday morning and replaced it with a CPR bak-pak. My constant fight against cyano was driving my nuts. With all the macro in the tank, growing great, it just seamed redudant to have another one on the back. Anyway, that afternoon after we returned from a short outing and I went to check on things and found the littlest one stuck to the sponge on the bak-pak power head. I removed her at first thinking she was already dead but as I moved to the kitchen she moved so I set up a ½ gallon pico and put her in there. Unfortunately she didn’t make it dieing this morning around 10am. But I am not discouraged, disappointed yes, but not discouraged.

Sorry about you loss,
I am going to set up a sea horse tank for my class room next year. I think I am going to use H. erectus. So from what I see Kras, you have macro and gorgs in your set up. BTW, the tank I am using is a 40 bowfront. What kind of media are you running in your Renas?
Thanks
Joe

Rich, the tank looks great. Sorry about the loss of the little one, as you said she may have had a preexisting condition. Keep us posted on the progress of the tank and good luck with the Cyno. I'm in that battle with ya :(

PUMA,

I will be getting a pair of H. erectus in a few months from dracomarine, very exciting. The macro grows great in the tank I picked up a bunch more from EA&P which is also growing nicely. In the rena I alternate between charcoal and ammonia chips and both 20 and 30 ppi foam sponges. Unfortunately I seem to be grogonia deficient I have terrible luck with them. So I may be just add a few more feather dusters and forget about them. The dusters seem to put up with quite a bit from the seahorses which was really surprising. I have a dark purple one and when I first got it, it was really shy the slightest current or light change caused it retract. Now they grab on to the "feathers" with their tales using it as a hold with little to no reaction from it.
