I have mixed feelings about it. It's great that they finally have upgraded the hardware after so many iterations of the current one, but I don't really see much vast improvement over the "classic" one. The only real improvement I appreciate is the power bars being able to monitor usage independently, main application for me is to tell when a pump/heater/etc is drawing more or less amps than normal. It'd be nice to know my cheap Jaebo return pump is not really pulling amps anymore and has stopped so I can address the issue quickly versus finding about 2 days later or something. That alone might be worth the upgrade to me but having to buy all new stuff and not getting a display screen is a tough pill to swallow.

It seems they spent all their money on aesthetics and simple feature upgrades such better module/peripheral connectivity but did very little on the upgraded feature set to warrant an upgrade. It doesn't really do anything better for the most part. Just looks fancier. I'm a little underwhelmed right now and now staring at the premise of having to upgrade or else hold on to an outdated piece of hardware.

The new energy bars sadly won't work with the old Apex controllers. The new apex controller will be backwards compatible though so it can use the old energy bars.

The ability to monitor each outlets power consumption is nice. The removal of the screen is a deal killer for me.
I use the screen for accessing the feed modes and monitoring PH/Temp swings. I like being able to see the screen.

If the screen is an option, then I can use my old one, if not, then I would look at the vertex unit before I would buy another Apex.

Also looks like they are doing away with the email warnings and expect you to load an application on your device to get warnings.

Spend more money on functionality and a little less on pretty packaging in my opinion..

They said you can use the old screen with unit but it won't be included in the package as they want to allow the customer the option to purchase or not. They will also be dropping the price of the screens to $99 for those that want to add it on.

I see a lot of "classic" apex units for sale without the screen soon.

I went ahead and pull the trigger and pre ordered mine since I was in the market for one. For a 1st time buyer it's great but for the people who have the classic, I see how you got the short end of the stick. I'm sure it would not have been to complicated to make the new energy bar work with the classic APEX.
Putting the Gold on sale right before they announce a new model was not right. Sure the Gold was at a good price but most people would have spent the bit extra for the new model. I belive the Gold package would have sold just as well if it went on sale after the announcement of the new apex and that way given people a better comparison choice.
Hopefully they will continue to support the classic APEX for years to come. With their customer support record I don't see how they would not.

Has all the probes included without the need of extra modules which is cool. I like the idea but the price point is a bit higher which might push away some of the folks out there that were on the fence about which controller to get to a more economical solution from a competitor. :noidea:

OMG, don't do it.
Go with GHL if you want to switch. And their stuff is always compatible... and upgradeable... and built/engineered beyond anything else.
Apex is making a lot of people angry right now.
