I have been in the hobby a few years. First time using the apex. When I first set it up it would disconnect all the time. So last night I thought it was the same issue. Come to find out I really had a problem this time. Just finished a big water change and added a ton of carbon. Anything else??? My zoas seem ok, I’m 50% looking dead and 50% alive at the moment.

Heater exploded?
I hate that. Get some polyfilter and change as much water as you can.
Good luck saving your livestock!

Does anybody's tank ever get cold enough to turn the heater on? My chiller cycles on and off all winter. I have a heater in there. It's a titanium one so hopefully its more durable, but i have thought about taking it out as I don't think it has kicked on in 5 years. If its not in there, that is one less thing to go wrong.

How do you have your heater threshold set up in the Apex? You need to make sure it kicks in at desired lower temp and turns off at the desired max as well.

All I run is heaters. I don’t have a chiller. Heaters are set to 81.5 and never have a problem. That’s the temp the tank naturally heats to in the summer so I just maintain that.

I actually have 3 heaters in my sump. We keep our house at 68 in the summer and colder in the winter. My wife and I are from up north. One is set at 78.5-80, one at 79-80 and the third 79.5-80. The worst part is I just replaced all three last week.

My chart from today is a little messed up due to my issue.

I guess you guys run your tanks a little warmer than I do. I keep mine at 77 so I guess that's why the chiller runs so much.

How did it crack? Was it because it became exposed to air and overheated?

I only ask because failing heaters are a common issue. However the only way I have really seen them fail is due to exposure to air (I.e. become not submerged anymore) and crack. Or failure of the regulating mechanism so they can also crack but will usually cook the entire tank in the process. Either way, the first failure type would suggest some additional problems either with placement or some failure to maintain water level. The second should be guarded against by a controller and a socket set so be active only in a certain temperature range. I am glad to hear that it looks like mostly everything survived and I hope my heater never fails like that.

No idea? No air. I did my maintenance yesterday afternoon and all was good. The ones I replaced last weekend were a couple years old and I replaced them so this wouldn’t happen.

Typical. Try to stay ahead of something. On further thought, does any know if this can also happen with the flat black heaters? I have only ever seen glass tube heaters crack like that.

Hard to justify the $60 extra for titanium. Well I lost a lot more in corals and the count is still rising. It’s an easy decision now.
There was another thread not long ago on here that someone titanium heater cracked also and fried thier tank.
