but fortunately,I was having breakfast in the kitchen and smelled the smoke early enough to avoid anything major...I had to blow the small flames 5-7" before it really took off.Wow.

I'm sooo annoyed, since I don't have any clue of why that happened.
My actinics were lit for about 10-15 minutes and that's the outlet that started burning. The outlet has a drip loop, is not under the tank so never wet... everything else is still working OK( wavemaker,10k lights ) but I'm now scared of using that unit.
anybody heard of such a thing???

it seems I'm having all the fun these days!

I find summer the toughest time on our reefs. I seem to run into more issues during the hot months than I do during the cool ones. Good luck and I would replace the whole powerstrip!!!!

Sooooooooo, glad you caught that.
One of the science labs had a beautiful reef tank @ a private school out here last year. Sponsored by Mattress Mack, very nice indeed. Large flames that burned and caused smoke damage for the entire lab, firemen suspect the tank, but it was the last thing they said before they smashed an AXE through the middle of the tank!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8O

First I feel for you. You are being reef challenged this month.
It stinks when everything hits at once!

Second do what TED said. Do not take it apart, report to the manufacture first. They might void replacement if they see it has been opened and it may be a pattern and something they need to know!

Third some thoughts!
Typical to what you see would be a short or overload.
What was plugged in that outlet? Is that outlet rated to take the load you had in it? I don't have one of those units but are some outlets rated to pull smaller loads than the others.

What seems odd is that the unit does not have a fuse to blow in an overload/shortage event like this? Also I would have thought your GFIC would have tripped from this!

more info

guys,I am pretty happy it happened this morning when I was there:)

Thanks for all suggestions.
Here's some additional info:
- my two 56W actinics were plugged in there and had been lit for about 15 minutes already
-GFCI did not trip
- the fuse did not blow

I've sent an email+ left a VM to the Digital aquatics guys;I've had this unit for 2 months,it was unused.I will not do anything before I hear back from them.

Overall, I feel a bit overwhelmed ( don't get me started on my return pump that does not fit in the return compartment of the refugium/sump I installed over the week end) :p

Send them 2 emails and left a voicemail.
I would have thought they'd be a bit more responsive on this kind of problem... Nice product so far, though.

Sorry to hear this happened, but please keep us updated, I was thinking of getting one of these systems, but now I'm not so sure.

agreed with EK,it's still a great product and i'd recommend it to anyone( who has a fire extinguisher handy). J/K.
It's a great product and I'm sure DA will make good on that.

I'm sure they will, too. However, I'd be more concerned in finding out the cause of the problem.

Good luck.
