Went collecting last night in front of the Rain Forest. The sargasum was coming in at a very slow pace but every piece I picked up, there was something in it. Here is what I found. A mess load of pipefish, one yellow seahorse, mess load of angles (threw back), sargasum file fish, many different shrimp, one small look down fish, small spade fish. Also while out in the water I had some kind of eel that kept swimming around, so I caught 4, unknown what kind. I believe they are some kind of garden eel. After putting them in my Galveston tank they went right into the sand. If anyone knows what kind of eels they are please let me know. Here is a video my wife took last night. Sorry the video of eels are not good. I will get a pic of them tonight when they come out of the sand. Hopefully tonight.

If anyone would like any pipe fish, Anglers, eels etc.. please let me know by PM's. I will be going back down tonight just looking for the unusual stuff like look down fish and seahorse etc. Only keeping what folks PM me for. You will need to pick up at my place only, and will not meet so if you are not willing to drive to Friendswood please do not ask to meet some where. My Galveston tanks already as enough stuff in it and don't want to add to the collection of things. I would rather leave it at Galveston.

Is the seahorse male or female? Do you know what kind it is?

I believe its a Kelloggi just not real sure yet, The little guy as two little spikes on it head. And don't remember if Kelloggi have spikes or not. I'm leave it alone for a couple days where I don't stress it out.

Typically only two species of seahorses are found in Galveston: H. zosterae (dwarf seahorse) and H. erectus. Coronets are the spines you see. No two seahorses have the same coronet. Without a pict I would have to say you have a H. zosterae. Oh, Kelloggi is Indo-pacific.

From what I can gather it looks to be a H. erectus. I didn't know the Kelloggi is from the Indo-pacific area. Thanks for the info, I can now stop lying to people about what kind they are. LOL

Wow, stuff I learned 15 years ago. I researched seahorses after a presentation from an aquaculture guy from Draco Marine. I am not sure if they are still around. Some universtiy out east. I am just up the road from you just inside Pearland.

this may be a dumb question but can you tell me if you guys are putting these creatures in your display tanks as show specimens or are they a food source...I go offshore fishing all the time in fact i was out 3 times last week and I can tell you the weeds are as thick as I have seen them in many years...I actually pulled in allot of it to look thorough it after seeing these post here...I found lots of tiny little shrimp like sexy shrimp with 2 or 3 little white dots on them but not sure there were hundreds..I threw them all out...I didn't see any seahorses but will def look closer next time..If anyone here is into offshore fishing and wants to go sometime I always have room on the boat...We could stop and gather some of the untouched 50-70 mile out stuff...lol.......

Pretty much everything you have collected in the sargassum is not native to Galveston. The angler fish the sea horse you have the pipe fish all come in with the sargassum and will die here with out ever establishing a population. They travel a long way and cover a lot of open ocean before they get here all the way from the sargso sea in the middleish of the Atlantic ocean. These are all species that are adapted to life there and are pretty much only found there. The animals you are collecting are unfortunate souls that were in the wrong part as the currents change around and got swept away. The fish you are catching are natives and are found around the sargassum because it is a crazy food source with all the shrimp that come in on it. I would love a picture of the eels that you said you caught. They are most likely native eels like shrimp or spotted eels that are out feeding they stay buried for the most part during the day. I am personally jealous because I go collecting in the sargassum pretty much every year for the past several years and i have yet to get a file fish and i have only gotten a couple of sea horses. All the fish you catch though that are associated with the sargassum will eventually die here so releasing them really won't do them any good but giving them to folks is a good gesture at least they can be enjoyed and have a little meaning before the die.
