I hate changing the sock out in my sump constantly! It only seems to last about a day before its overflowing. I don’t have room for one of those roller filter things... so whats the point anyway if 80% of the time it’s over flowing?

Have you tried the cups?

My sock holder holds 6x4" socks. I usually use 4x10µ socks. They last about a day, maybe two. The 200µ socks last about 4 to 5 days. I never fill the last two anymore.

If you’re running socks, they’re overflowing the next day, and you don’t change them but once a week, then you’re effectively not running socks. The effectiveness of a sock is only realized once you remove it. Although trapped, anything the socks catch is still within your water column decaying and the corals don’t even have a shot at eating it.

Tried a different micron size? I have a couple that are too small and plug every day vs around three days on my others.

I battled with that too. I eventually got a roller mat. However, I would rather run a tank without socks to allow extra nutrients back for the fish and corals to consume. I would make an algae scrubber and implement it into your system if you decide not to deal with socks.

In my case, the only physical removal is done by my roller mat. I have chaeto and algae scrubber that I let run wild. My protein skimmer is on, but only to increase pH. I let all the skimmate back into the sump. It's a balance that has worked for me. I also dose prodibio every few weeks to keep that bacteria colony happy.

How do y'all clean used socks? I usually just flip them inside out and pressure wash them and then let them air dry. Sorry about the high jack, just figured since we are talking about them.

I do the same as Steve, bleach only wash, extra rinse, extra spin and air dry.

I use a filter cup with filter floss. Just toss it out weekly. It's over-saturated weekly, but I just do it when I'm doing weekly maintenance anyways.
I do the same as Tenny. I would probably get out of the hobby if I need to clean 6 x 7" socks in my sump every other day!
I just replace filter floss every weekend during maintenance. BTW - I have brand new socks and silencers that came with my sump for sale if someone wants them.

So there are two different types of socks. Can some one help me with the proper name for the thin version? I like these because you can clean them in the sink by just spraying them down.

I believe you’re referring to mesh socks.

I am working toward no socks but I HAVE to run socks right now since the tank is only about 9 months old. When I don't run the socks I get outbreaks of uglies. Since I have a dozen socks it helps and just throw the dirty ones into a sealed bucket and clean then all when they are all dirty. Yes, it is an hour out of a month I cannot get back....
I tried just spraying them out and letting them dry but found they clogged up quicker. So now I needed to spray them out then wash them in the washing machine with a little bleach and extra rinse cycle and air dry for at least 24 hours.

Eventually I will get back to no socks because I have a 180 gallons of refugium and rock tanks and those sponges and grass have to eat too! :)

What kind of socks? Mesh or felt, 4" or 7", and micron size(s)?
