I don't trust it that way either. I have Apex, three heaters, each with its own controller/sensor. Being in IT, I bring the mindset of "disaster recovery and business continuity", so I tend to not take many risks. You have heard about Murphy's law, right? Then I add it is not IF it happens, it is WHEN it will happen. :)

The best thing to do is to let your Apex turn your heaters on/off with a slight variance. Then set your heaters a few degrees higher as a failsafe.

I had a reef tank that ran around 79 in the winter and 84 in the summer, and all the corals did just fine.

Just like the ocean. I did too for a while, but got tired of the large swings and bought some fans recommended by gregg. They work like champs and are quiet. I just have one running at the moment, but will be adding another.

The highest I have seen was 86 in summer.
Marsh member fishcraze had his tank in the garage. His tank was one of a kind full of corals. (RIP Quoc) [emoji22] [emoji22][emoji22]

Yeah... :( He was such a great guy and I learned so much from him. I wish I still had some of his corals left, just to remember him by.

His swings got up into the low 90's, bro. I've seen it at 91 degrees personally. His tank was an anomaly though... I wouldn't recommend that to anyone. LOL!

BRS advised against using apex to control a heater. I think he burned out a few sockets on his EB. But they do sell a competing product so who knows. They advised to use a heater controller instead. IDK I don't trust power cycling heaters or chillers that often seems like it would take a toll on the internals.

Yeah and he even had a big chiller on that thing if I remember. I only had my take get to 88 last year when my heater broke and wouldn't power off. Still need to get a shut off or use my apex but idk if I want to use the apex for the heater. My chiller couldn't keep up esp because all my equipment is in the garage.

Maybe If you were doing a .01 or very minimal variant maybe. When did you see this? Can you link the video please.

Glad you found this video. As I said above... if you set the heater to a 0.1 variant...this is not good. :) Now the question becomes... do we all set our heaters to a certain temp and use the Apex as the "backup" to avoid "possibly" burning out 1 outlet?? Or... risk the chance of the number 1 failure point for reef tanks (heater failure with heater possibly stuck on and risk nuking the tank)?

I think I will email Terence Fugazzi and get his opinion and report back. I can tell you for sure that he may be doing it with the apex control, because if it burns out an outlet for him, he will go get another EB832 like it's nothing.

Man this is a tough one.

It appears from the video to use the other heater controller that will turn it off it temp gets to hot and let the heaters internal control handle everything else. Instead for risking the apex?

Yes pretty much.

I just question if you have a bigger variance more than 0.1. Like maybe 0.8 or even a 1.0 degree variant if that would be much better. That would reduce the off/on by 70% or more.

0.1 is literally on/off every 1 minute. That's crazy.

Tons of people running Calcium Reactors with their controller and let it control it with a 1.0 internal pH variant without any issues that I've heard of. Maybe it's a little less demanding than temp.

So I really don't know what to do here except seek expert advice from Terence and actually see what the outlets are rated for or what they can handle. I certainly don't wanna be short an outlet, because I burned it out, but I also wanna avoid a potential heater failure by using the Apex control.
