you know i have found that fish are very resilient i had something very import come up this week and forget to reset my heater cycle (two days on and two days off) and i accidentally cooked it to 86 and ALL OF THEM ARE ALIVE. im still lowering the temperature and checking the crab but although most people agree a good 79 to 78 is good there is a 2-degree sweet spot but, in the end, its also about how much they can take based on experience.
NOTE (i am horrible with my tank temp DO NOT USE MY TANK AS A MODLE UNLESS YOU WANT DEATH AND DECAY)

Minus the fail safes of a heater failing in the on position, I dont see what the fuss is about temperature. Like @frankc said, I keep them in a wide range of temperatures and never had any issue with growth or coloration.

So I just heard back from the Neptune Systems. They don’t particularly agree with Ryan. The impression that I got (although they didn’t say it directly) was that a 0.1 variance is just dumb. LOL. I’m pretty sure this was why they called me because they didn’t want a paper trail. :)

The guys basically said that 0.5 or higher will be just fine. So I’m thinking 0.5 to 1.0 variance in my own tank. I’ll probably do 0.6 -0.8 on my personal equipment. One of the guys told me that he does 0.5.

They did say to never over-power your tank with a heater that’s too large. This is not good.

For example:
Don’t use a 300W heater on a 50/G tank. You do not want the water getting to the set point in 5 minutes. It should be a slow process like 20 minutes or so. This way it doesn’t toggle on/off - on/off.

With that said...I asked about in the event that we do burn out an outlet how much would it cost to fix? They told me that if it’s under warranty it’s obviously free. If not, it’s $50 for one outlet and $10 for each additional outlet. So if you burned out two it would be $60 to fix. The caveat to that is you would be w/o your EB832 when it’s sent to be fixed.

I hope this helps everybody. If you want to control your heaters with your Apex it’s perfectly fine. Ryan is a voice among many voices in this hobby. Don’t believe everything you hear.

I have lots of heaters it is the house temp that was the problem for some reason the house heating system did not go on after I set it to a lower temp. but all is good corals and fish are fine. I usually heat my house with a wood stove and save lots of money cus I get my wood for free just down the street. I was only gone for a couple of days on one of my Niagara Canada trips yaa
