How many people would be offended if we actually called it a Christmas party? This whole "PC so we don't hurt anyone's feelings" is ridiculous...

I didn't even realize it's not called the Christmas party. In the Volunteer program it is. Hmm....

Members are cordially invited to an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most joyous traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, but with respect for the religious persuasion of others who choose to practice their own religion as well as those who choose not to practice a religion at all;

Additionally,

I offer my best wishes to everyone for a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the generally accepted calendar year 2012, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions have helped make our society great, without regard to the race, creed, color, religious, or sexual preferences of the wishes.

Disclaimer One: This invitation and greeting are subject to clarification or withdrawal. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others and no responsibility for any unintended emotional stress these greetings may bring to those not caught up in the holiday spirit.

Not me, why does the majority have to sacrifice for fear that 1 in 100 is gonna get their feelings hurt. This club is supposed to be for the members and I say it should reflect the opinions of the members, or maybe all the talk is just that.

My question still hasn't been answered though...

Scratch that, This whole "PC so we don't hurt anyone's feelings" is BULLS417!

Y'all have fun celebrating your BS ChrismaChanuKwanzaCa. Unless everything says Christmas on it I'll be with other people who love God and aren't afraid to stand up for Him and what they believe in. And if you believe the same I'd appreciate you letting the people who actually run this place (instead of the majority) know. Don't forget, regardless of what Obama said, this is still a Christian nation!

I agree with this.

Taking Jesus out of Christmas is not something we as a whole should support.

Well, I agreed with that because it covered everything. I still call it Christmas, but for those who don't, we can't force it on them. I do think everything should be changed to say "Christmas", though. It would make a lot of people happy. :)

UGGHHH! My posting was intended to add some levity to the discussion. The whole subject of what we call the party seems to be more important to people then when we have it, where we have it, who is going to be there...

Bottom Line: It is called the Annual Holiday Party because that is what we've always called it nothing more nothing less. We always decorate it with Christmas Decorations including a Tree and sometimes more, but even that is nothing more than being in the spirit of the holidays.

This is not a religious event it is a year end party that has been held every year for members and a party is all it is. We gather, we eat, we look at and talk about fish.

Our only goal is to gather and have fun.

Regards,

John

I got the joke, I even laughed. Your plan to add levity certainly worked though my wife did notice it never said "Merry Christmas. Then again, of all of the languages I know I don't believe it was mentioned in any of them. They all say holiday or party. But if everything about iour party says "Christmas" what's wrong with calling it a Christmas party? When i see a duck I call it a duck, when I see a fish I call it a fish. When I see a Christmas party I don't call it a holiday party... So if it won't hurt anything why not title it appropriately? Sorry John, you know I like you but I'm not buying that it's just a party and it just happens to be around Christmas time and coincidentally is decorated in Christmas theme. If it was a duck John you wouldn't call it water fowl, let's call it what it is please.

Wait what does Jesus have to do with a holiday that's about Santa clause, Christmas lights, little elves that make toys and reindeer!?

I'm glad you asked... Christmas has absolutely NOTHING to do with the things you mentioned. Do a little reading and you'll find that the capitalist version so many people are lost in is less than century old.

What does Christmas really mean? Christ was born in the late summer/early fall. The Christmas I have read about was before Jesus Christ an it involves gift giving, feasting, and singing oh an was a pagan holiday that emperor constantine converted to the Christian holiday we call Christmas. In fact December 25th was the birth of the pagan son-god Mithra.

All true but as a religion and a nation this is the date we chose to celebrate His birth. We could argue semantics about anything, even Thanksgiving, but what does any of this have to do with the topic? This shouldn't be about the merits of Christianity, you can start another thread for that. It's about he party.

Is there a reason it can't simply be changed to say "Christmas Party"? I'm not trying to make people frusturated, but it's really easy to just go in and edit it.

I'm guessing that MARSH has already got the banners etc for the event and I am sure they arent going to change it based on a few peoples objection. If it was the over whelming majority that would be different but because it seems few actually care what its called then there wont be a change.

Because marsh is an organization it has to be politically correct? Technically Christmas falls under the holidays, so its a holiday party. Not sure why it turned into such a big deal the only thing that would change is the name. The party is still the same, let's just get together, have fun, an enjoy the thing that we all have in common.

The problem becomes that every one these days is trying to accommodate everyone else.

When I was a kid, I wondered why they said happy holidays and what not, I never asked though. I just assumed it was because of New Years and Christmas and Thanksgiving all being so close together that it was called the holiday season. Never did it ever strike me that it was to accommodate people of different faiths. Christmas was to celebrate the birth of Christ Jesus and that was that.

Now as an adult with everything else thats going on in the world, I can see the objection. Everyone everywhere is trying to take Jesus out of the celebration. The purpose of Christmas isnt to have a good time, its to celebrate Christ and in part we do this with giving gifts to show and remember the 3 kings which gave to the new born king.

By not calling it Christmas but instead calling it something else it takes away and minimizes God and takes him out of the celebration. Being people of faith we simply would rather that not be the case.

If the reason they call it a holiday party was because it fell with in the holiday season that would be one thing. But thats not the case here. John stated that (in not so many words) that this was done to accommodate all other faiths as well. The intent matters a great deal.
