Come on John, surely you could've found a way to bury this deeper. My comment was SPECIFIC to the thread topic and there are dozens of threads a month not relevant to the Marine and Reef Discussion forum that don't get moved, but this one got moved? I knew it would though, I knew better. I even said the religious debate needed to be had in a different thread, I guess that part got lost in the move though. The only person that got off topic was fightmeaboutit, you didn't have to kill the whole thing. And yeah, you killed it. This forum doesn't get near the traffic as where it was started.

I said it once and I'll say it again: I thought this was for the members, not the board, so I kinda figured it should be done the way the MEMBERS thought it should. All I was trying to do was find out if other members felt the same to determine if the topic should be pursued or dropped. If the majority felt the same way it should be changed to reflect that and not just the opinion of a couple of board members who don't even want to let it be debated. If the majority felt different then I would've dropped it. I didnt start a religious debate, he did. Enjoy your HOLIDAY party YOUR club.

There are only 10 federally recognized holidays an nobody says "Happy Holiday" for any of them except Christmas.

I'm not buying the BS about it just celebrating the end of the year, especially given all of the evidence to the contrary and I hope nobody else is that stupid either.

How about making a poll in the members only forum? The Christmas party is for members only so make a poll and see what the MEMBERS want to call it. The mod/bods always say this is our club so lets decide what we want to call our party. We may not be able to change it this year but we definitely can for next year.

After all, a quick search shows that 96% of Americans celebrate Christmas.

I agree with this 100%

If I wanted to bury the thread I could have just removed it or certainly stuck it in a dark hole somewhere, but no I linked it and continued the disucssion. The stickies are meant to keep the members informed of the events. If any religious or political debates got missed in the past, that happens; I certainly can't live on the website reading every single thread.

In the course of the past 4 days I've received 22 complaints regarding the thread so I went with the majority 3 against 22 I have nothing against it being called A Christmas Party, A winter Celebration, the December Party... It has always been the "Holiday Party" with no reason other than that was what was picked by the people hosting it 8 years ago. I did a little checking and actually "Happy Holiday's" is a traditional reference to the parties held in America and goes back to when this country was working to seperate it self from religious oppression and open its self up to religious freedom so chalk it up to American Tradition but I can not tell you what was in the mind of the BOD back, then I can only guess.

If it is that important to you then 'YES' start a vote to have it changed for next year; I'm not redoing all of the content over a name that has been posted since June without a single complaint. NO member needs permission to post a request for change in the members forum and my actions have proven that year after year. Plenty of things have changed because others took the initiative to make the request and get the backing of the members. Some of the changes have certainly caused me a ton of grief but I have always defended them as the will of the members. Ask any member that has ever asked me to block something or pull something or ban someone... I do not take it lightly and wont do it without a lot of effort to resolve the matter first.

We are now in the lounge and for the most part anything goes but personal attacks I felt it would be better to continue here where others can voice their opinion but not force everyone that links to the stick for updates regarding the event to get emailed about every debate statement posted.

I personally don't like discussing my religious beliefs on MARSH since this the place I come to find people that can put up with my reef keeping obsession and I can tell you that no matter what the members ask for the party to be called it will still always be the last party of the current year to get together and have a little fun.

I am with Scott on this one! Christmas is known as the celebration of the birth of Christ! Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Christ. It is what it is!!! I, for one, am tired of the political correctness to comfort the minority who oppose! 75% of the United States believes in God and Jesus in one form or another.

I respect others beliefs but I will not allow them to change the meaning of mine. Too many minority groups have gotten away with this. On the dollar bill, it says... "IN GOD WE TRUST"... but you do not see those who do not believe stop using the dollar. Like I said... It is what it is!

I personally wont attend, just because of the simple fact that I dont want to be around people that bitch about the word Christmas because it offends them. Well people bitching about Christianity offends me since it was one of the main basis on what our Country was founded on. I could care less in who what or why you believe in what you believe, just dont affect my life with it and push your agenda or beliefs on me.

Honestly, I think you may be getting worked up over nothing. John stated that he called the party what he did because that's what it has been called every year for the past 7-8 years. Unless I missed it, I haven't seen anyone NOT want to call it a Christmas party. That is kind of why I said to make the poll. We may be surprised and find out everyone wants to call it that. I'd hate for you to miss out on the party thinking people there don't like Christmas when in fact everyone there does. Like I said, it's called the Christmas party in the Volunteer Program and Holiday party in the stickied thread. Don't let the name keep you from having a good time with a good group of people. Even if 2-3 has different views than you.

Edit: OK never mind. I just looked at the Volunteer Program and it has been changed from Christmas Party to Holiday Party. Wasn't like that the other day. Sorry.

I dont know that I agree with all of this, I think it is completely ok to be offended when people want to push Christ out of our Christmas events. Like others have noted there has been quite enough of that for centuries, and sadly they still arent done pushing us out. I do however agree that we should have a poll. Though I would be sad if this club was so completely anti Christian.

I dont personally think that we should be attacking John no matter the reason for why the thread got moved. He moved it and even explained why. So harassing him about it isnt in anyone's best interest.

I think the mistake was him pointing out specifically that the name was to accommodate other faiths.

This I find very interesting...

I think I am gonna start the poll.

No one is trying to push Christ out of Christmas marsh is a diverse group of people. What one person may believe might be different for others. Calling it a holiday party is just to be fair to everyone thats pretty much it.

Like I said, I think the problem started with Johns comment about that being its intent. I dont believe it ever would have even been a problem if it hadnt have been made light of.

That being said, as a whole everywhere you turn people are trying to take Christ out of Christmas. My daughter goes to a Christian dance school in Friendswood and they will be performing at "Santa in the Park". When did Santa become the person we worship? Kind of like saying "Hey lets celebrate buying a whole bunch of stuff!" It wasnt like that 3 years ago... its just one thing at a time and a few of us feel the need to voice how we feel about it. Like Bad_LS1 said, something like 96% of Americans celebrate Christmas... so how can you have that with out Christ? I dont really get that personally unless you admit that its all about getting and buying "stuff" makes the whole thing feel rather empty and shallow to me.

I would bet that if you asked 100 school age kids what Christmas was about 75% would say its the day I get presents and couldnt tell you anything about the symbolism of the holiday.

I would be surprised if the number was that low, my wife says I'm pessimistic.

Unfortunately this is probably true. My kids know the difference and when we teach them about Jesus and explain Santa we always say that Santa is the giving spirit that Jesus embodied.

The poll on this debate was moved to the members only section. If you would like to vote on next years party name please go there to do so.

I voted. I'm not going to get into the debate though. I took my licks (my turn on the whipping pole) earlier this year. :)
