Probably Aquarium World on 290...nice to look at...not nice to shop at....expensive prices and a staff who is clueless on most things.

However, it's also the only store that gives a 7 day guarantee on their fish and they usually have more fish than any place else, but other than that I agree with Brandon.

Their guarantee is B*. You have to bring in a water sample w/ your deceased livestock, and they'll try to find anything wrong in the water to make the guarantee void. A guy went in there with his water and was told he didn't have enough oxygen in the tank. Well, of course there wasn't enough oxygen in a bag of water that was sitting in the car for an hour or two! Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if they told people that the temperature of the water in their baggie is too high or too low.

I took a fish back once to them and didn't have any problems. If you do ever need to, I always figured you could just mix up some new water and you would have perfect readings. No nitrite, ammonia, etc... :D

I have not had any issue with their guarantee. They also do free water testing... so make sure that you bring in your water BEFORE you buy your fish. When I first started out with saltwater, my water params were so bad they refused to sell me livestock.

The only problem with the guarantee is that you must bring in the body. Makes sense to me, but it may be next to impossible to retrieve the fish if it floats behind the rockwork.

Last time I was in there, (last week), they had a sign up showing prices for water testing, the more tests, the more it cost. None of it was free, which I thought was hilarious, because nearly all the rest of the stores I frequent will test your water for free, not to mention run some of the less often used tests, if you suspect a problem in another area.

I like going in the store to look, and ocassionaly I have bought something there that none of the other stores had, but it's a pretty rare thing.

i agree with the statement above. they do have some nice, hard to find stock occasionally, but the place is generally pricey. i used to really like going there, but nowadays there are too many sick fish in their tanks to make my viewing enjoyable. then again, i don't know of any other stores in that area. their selection of koi isn't bad compared to LFS, and the prices for them aren't as inflated.

Aquarium World is the most expensive store in Houston. They have to pay for that 40,000 gallon tank somehow. True, the store is spectacular, but their selection is usually of standard fish priced more than double the price of any other store in town. I have also notice that their stock is, for the most part, either sick or weak or stressed. Even if the prices were decent, I probably would not buy there due to the state of the livestock.

I also have to echo the sentiment that their staff are clueless when it comes to saltwater. Not only are they clueless, there are some that will answer a question as if they know it even when they don't. They will throw out a line of misinformation (read BS) that would make a "stand up philosopher" proud.

heh. Some of those girls that work in there know their stuff. Last weekend I went in with a 20% off livestock coupon, but everything looked like it was on the verge of death. I ended up giving the coupons out to people in the shop. It's been pretty hit-or-miss each time I go it, but its still fun to go look, regardless of pricing.

Thanks, I've enjoyed this site very much.
These Galveston collection trips are amazing. I can't wait to get down there and hunt for new tank additions.

Great place to buy your tank and dry goods but that is it in my opinion. Dave (owner) thinks he is GOD and his word is gospel.

As stated before, their prices are WAY too high for the quality of their livestock. I personally have not spent $.01 in that store due to that fact alone. I will not waste my money on a store that does not care to house healthy animals.

But the store's setup is nice.

I kid you not.. I listened to a girl tell a person that a sebae anemone was a great starter "coral" but you have to get a clown too or it will probally die. I nearly $hit myself right there. Bad part was I could not tell the guy is was not true because they were bagging it all up right then. I have never steped foot in that place again. However they used to cary staghorn hermits..... which look unreal.

I've gotta disagree with this. I was in there two weeks ago when I was looking for fine aragonite sand. I called them, and they told me they had it. I got there and they didn't, but the sand they did have was double what I saw in the other two stores I was in that day. Their tanks tend to run at least 25% higher than in several other stores in town, including Aquatic Center and Global.

I've played dumb when it comes to livestock several times when I go in to look around, ask questions that I know the answers too. (I do this in any new store, or ones with bad reputations.) I haven't gotten any bad advice. I have had them tell me that they don't know, but that's a truthful answer and can respect it, much more than just making something up. I've also had them tell me that certain fish won't go with others, and they were correct. I've only done this with the women in the back that retrieve the corals/livestock. (I wonder why I've never seen a guy back there before?)

I've had lots of experience with Aquarium World as it's the most convenient store to my offices where my tank resides.

1. Dave does have a high horse and rides it often. He also does not like ecosystem setups because as he puts it "everyone thinks its a miracle cure for filtration problems and it's not." (I could not disagree more. My ecosystem finally stabilized my water parameters and eliminated my nitrate problems).

2. I buy frozen food from them often as prices are about the same as other places around town.

3. The girls in the back actually seem to know a lot about corals and fish... especially the tall, thin lady. She knows here stuff.

4. I was in there last week and overheard another girl giving a newbie very solid advice on what corals to choose and what to stay away from with her current setup and lighting, which was lousy, of course.

5. Undeniably expensive place to buy livestock AND dry goods. Tank prices aren't that great to me either.

It's a free, convient way to kill a half hour looking at fish and corals...just lock your wallet in the glove box before you go in! :)
