Well, first off. This last week with the cold was too much for my tank w/ single titanium Heater. Dipped down into 60's then upto about 71 when lights came on. Got a second heater which brings it up to say 76 but then down to 71 w/ lights off. Lost two Kenya Trees, all my PomPoms, the couple PIF's I had (sorry guys). Big Monti Caps are not looking to great.

Sea Apple was been acting funny but tonight Sea Apple was acting really crazy, blowing up and thinning out gaping mouth, butt wide open, all this for about 30minutes after I tore up a small dead kenya tree trying to get it out of the tank (gassy looking stuff expelled). I left the room and came back to find it guts layed out of it's butt, alive but hell no am I keeping it in longer than It takes to get it out. Tried netting it, but it was holding on like it was glued down. So I had to remove the canopy and take the whole rock out. I changed out as much water as I could and tank is now a mess.

As of now, 45minutes or so after it spilled it's guts. All livestock look unharmed so far. I guess I'll know in the mourning if i'm calling it quits.

Was this a Fruedian slip?

No need to call it quits, it happens, then you learn.

Not to rub salt, could you have set your house heat a little higher? I had to, my heater is undersized (intentionally) but when it gets real cold I have to set my house a little warmer to make sure the tank doesnt get too low.

Good luck, I have some more PIFs if you stay in.

Everything is looking as good as it did before the Dead Apple. If I turn the heater up too much it toasts my kids upstairs.

Just makes them tougher  You have to have your priorities!

No need to quit. Just learn from your mistakes and move on.

Remember that PIF isn't just about spreading corals. It's also about passing forward what you've learned. You'll be doing more of a dis-service to the PIF group if you quit. So stay, watch, learn, teach, all while having fun.

If anything, learn to bulletproof your system. Set up back ups, have a detailed list of what to do under certain situations. IMO you should always have a back up return pump and heater. The general rule for heater is 5 watts per gallon. I like to split this between 2 heaters. For really cold nights, doesn't hurt to keep a spare heater around.

I hate to see people leave on a bad note. If you leave only after 6 months, your tank just got up and running and through it's overall cycle. In my opinion, you're not giving it much of a chance.

Unfortunately, you'll have another problem with critters in your tank dying. Anemones and cucumbers can easily wipe out a tank. These animals don't live forever. Imagine all the individuals without power during the hurricane. Many left the hobby, many rebuilt and stuck it through.

As someone else already mentioned, bullet-proof or safe gaurd your tank as best as you can.

This is a learning experience for all of us. That is one of the great things about Marsh, we get the opportunity to learn from others, as well as ourself. Another great thing about Marsh, is we are here to help and support any way we can. One way is through the PIF program as previously stated.

Many of us that have been through the hurricane have been in similar shoes as you now... A lot of money tied up in a dead tank. Just know that we are here to help you rebuild. Don't hesitate to call on us.

You might want to run a ton of carbon, help keep the toxins from it from killing the rest of the tank. Always the hard part about keeping a sea apple. Sorry to hear about this!

Further to Bullet-proofing your system, having a simple alarm goes along way!

Aqua controllers are idea for this (it's not just a fancy timer), but here is a couple alternatives (that are less that the cost of a coral or fish)

Sorry to hear it Padanky. As a past sea apple owner I know the stresses involved.

Whatever you do, don't bow out over this. You know as well as I do that the worry of this taking place never left your mind from the moment you added the apple to the system. It's always there.. waiting to attack.

Run carbon, change water, watch everything closely for changes for the worse. Learn from this and consider yourself finished with sea apples... not reefing.

Question: What wattage of heater were you running on the system? I never even considered the fact that my heater might not be able to keep up with the house temp. My tank never leave 77. Lights on at 77.3 and lights off at 77.9. I wonder how often it cycles while I sleep?

you need to unplug the fans on that canopy if you are keeping the house that cool, i know this from experience. both sets on each side are wired blowing inwards.. youre just pumping cool air over the surface of the water cooling it down real quick.

Everything is great. Changed out about 8 gallons last night of water I had mixed already. Just pulled the Canopy off and did a little rescape. Nothing Died, I'll probably do a water test tonight.

Not leaving, I can't leave. I wouldn't want to leave the hobby, but my wife sees so much money put into it and now I'm down Corals, Sea Apple, Two fire fish (notdue to Sea Apple) just this week. I love it, kids love it, and Wife loves it. She's telling me to do FOWLR but that would suck with only a 72 Bowfront.

Mario, Fans are unhooked. I need to replace/fix one side stopped working.

Mario, have you had the any problems with the caps and candycane in the past that it came out of fine?. The orange on I got kinda bleached and and is now darkening, and the candycanes are not looking too great. I'm thinking it will all come out of it.
