Ok here is a bad shot of the midnight angel. I'll try to get some better ones when the lights come on and it comes out of hiding a little more.

Ok random pictures pulled off the camera and a couple of the new guy in there as well. Sorry for the quality.... I still have no camera skills to speak of. Any good shots in here were most likely taken by my wife who has actually sat down to read the manual.

Has anyone ever had any trouble with high nitrates coming out of oceanic salt. I've always used red sea in the past, but the last bucket I bought was oceanic and my nitrates are reading off the friggin charts. At first I thought that it was just a faulty test, but I bought 2 new tests (2 different brands) and they are both reading ridiculously high. I bought a new bucket of Red Sea and will do some water changes to get them down, but I'm at a loss about what would cause such a large nitrate problem with a relatively small bio load. Any info or past experience would be great. I don't want to have this surprise me later.

Tank nitrate went off the charts. I've got it coming down now, but I'd like to know if anyone had ever had this problem with Oceanic salt before. Nothing else was changed other than salt, but I went a long time assuming I just had a bad test before I bought others to double check. I don't have many corals in there yet and they didn't seem to be doing badly. They still don't for that matter, but the color of my nitrate test water is scary.

what's your scale (in other words, define "off the charts")? Nitrates arent usually that big of a deal, but you're doing well to get them down. I've never heard of an issue with Oceanic giving high nitrates, and I would be surprised if that's actually your source.

The salifert test was reading at about 80ppm not too long ago, and the api test somewhat lower than that. The salifert is now at or slightly below 50 and the water change is happening right now so I'm hoping to be in the 30's this evening.

Ray have you tested your freshly made saltwater? Do you have a TDS meter for your RO?

I tested the new stuff for the change yesterday. The answer to the TDS meter question is yes, I have one, but I don't think its working any more. I'm shopping for a replacement right now.

Nitrates are reading at about 30ppm now. One more water change ought to have me in a safer range.

So how is everything reacting to the "new" conditions?

Frogspawn is more extended than I've seen it and the GBTA seems happier as well. Everything else seems to be holding steady. Most of it wasn't acting bothered in the first place though.

Photography practice

Just a bunch of random pictures here. Nothing really new in the tank at the moment, but my picture taking abilities suck and I needed the practice. Besides I'm killing time while the brownies are in the oven and these things smell rowdy. She would make me incredibly fat if I were home more often. Also, note the poor condition of the Galaxea in one of the shots. I've never had much luck with galaxea and this one seems to be going downhill as well. I don't want to lose it due to ignorance or stupidity, but it just doesn't seem to like me. Here goes. Constructive criticism or outright trash talk about my photography abilities is welcomed.

This little guy is actually a model citizen in here for some reason. When I had them in the past they were always the devils very own firstborn children.

That's not the piece of galaxia that made it through the hurricane, move, unfiltered tank for 4 months, no usable lights, etc, is it? It been un-stopable in my tank.

Other than that, I think you should work on your apature(sp) settings to improve your pictures. They look good, but I think they would look better if the whole shot wasnt in focus.
