Ok, so what is the Po4 level ?
I would like to dose less of the Nitrates every day!
We may go to no3 of 1.5 - 2, but need the Po4 level to determine which is the key parameter we are working on, that causes the trouble.

-Andre
Yesterday evening PO4 .05. NO3 was 2/3.

I'm not dosing nitrates daily. Just when test shows 0 to under 2.

Are you sucking out the cyano as much as possible during weekly water changes? I'm not sure I'd let it get too out of control.

Very nice then.
Ok, do another dose of Biodigest since the Cyano are thriving, bacteria seem to work well.
Perfect time for the Biodigest bacteria to populate, hence another dosage for better competition.
Reduce light cycle to 6 hours a day, suck the cyano as you do and when the Biodigest has been dosed, keep Skimmer off for 5 hours.

So, are you sure this is Cyano and not Spirulina and how and why?
Just curious.

Observation-wise, it seems like the other algaes simply died off once cyano/spirulina became the dominant species in the tank uptaking nutrients. Is this what you have been observing Malira?

Is that part of the method Andre? To add lots of nutrients to have the cyano/spirulina become dominant in the tank and outcompete the other nuisance algaes/bacterias and then wipe out the Cyano/spirulina later in one fell swoop?

Sort of. There is mostly theory behind that since the bacteria strains and families, you can't really identify and observe and count ;-(
But that's ok, all big guys in the chemistry started with believes with limited evidence, so I do the same and read shitloads of material about bacteria, as well a lot about pathogenic ones ;-)...........

However,
Thoughts are basically and method that "mostly" worked with the Guys on MARSH (Many didn't tell they followed this method ;-) ........),
feeding the good bacteria strains (Biodigest in this case) with the required nutrients such as Nitrates/Phosphates/Nitrogen as well in certain cases carbs.
As soon the food is there, I let them inject the 2nd vaccination of Biodigest.
If then typically the nutrients are being fed and brought in for a while, a healthy diversity of bacteria seems to establish and pest algae, bacteria mostly start then to disappear.
So I do guess that Malira won't get rid "naturally" of these Cyanos within the next 2-3 weeks.
I wish his nitrates would be less consumed, seems there are some bacteria really taken the Throne and do not won't give it away, lol.
Those very likely are bacteria that are being used in waste water treatment and bacterial products, such as Dr.Tims and MB7 and some more. Vibrant is actually mostly a blended mix of specific bacteria, suppose to do a certain specific job ;-)

MALIRA,
do me a favor if you can.
Prepare two of these DIESEL/PSX coral frag containers. Fill up each one with 100ml tank water and add in one container 5ml Vinegar and in the other one 1ml Vodka. Close them up and drop them in the sump for 2 days.
Then let me know what you are observing after 2 days.
I guess we will find brownish bacteria flakes in the vinegar container...........

Important is some time and patience and not going crazy because of some red slime or algae :pop2:

I had a cyano problem before. About 3 months ago I used chemiclean to get rid of it or fight it back. And before I saw Andre it was creeping back.

Why vodka? I like bourbon better?

Any brand I shouldn't use?

Pics of cyano test.
2 cups of water w/1 ml of peroxide.

Last time I tested 1 week ago.
You can see the red bleeding from the clumps.

New test.

After 2 hours

The frag plug had left side covered in red.
The water has a pink tint. It's hard to tell from the pic.

When get home I'll take some pics. I noticed when I dose biodigest, nitrates and phosphates take a nose dive.

Ok update time. The algae both turf and hair are going away slowly.

Cyano is has setup shop and will not relinquish its grip. Chemiclean or peroxide?
There is also a brown coming in.

If the hair is receding you are winning the battle! :D Looking good!!!! Don't worry about that cyano. It will go away when Andre gets you there. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, the numbers are getting better but the LPS has me concerned.

It seems like things were getting better last week with bigger water changes. I think I'm going back to them and more frequently. When my phosphorus test reagents come in I can test before and after water changes and doses to get a better feel for what the tank does. It's a good thing I keep notes/journal.

LPS are tough, are the acan polyps bailing out or are they just wasting away over time?

i had a really bad outbreak myself, from neglecting my reef for a very long time. Chemiclean works miracles! used it once. did a water change, used chemiclean, 20% water changes once a week for about a month. I dont have the best tank ever, but its never looked better.
