We went today no sargassum at all today. We did find a sand eel coming up out of the sand along the shore line on the west side. Tried collecting for peps dont think they were peps they were clear color and a ton of blennies. Blennies went back into the water... What do the sand eels eat?[/QUOT

They eat just about anything, sargassum and ghost shrimp, baby blue crabs, sargassum crabs, pipefish ect. ect. ect.

Yeah I catch the sand eels on hook and line all the time. The bigger ones take finger mullet, but they're scavengers and eat pretty much anything. You probably don't want to hear this, but the big ones are good eatin! Lol

On the shrimp you caught, a few years back I caught about a dozen of what I thought were ghost shrimp since they were completely clear. Once I put them in my tank they colored up and were clearly peppermint shrimp. Just a thought!

Well I have a sad note the eel did not make it. I might not have acclimated him long enough before putting him in the Galveston tank that I have going right now.
But you are correct on the shrimp they did color up and I think I had about 10 peppermint shrimps and two of them I think were pregnant...

Sorry to hear on the eel! If you want to try another one at some point keep an eye on his slime coat. When they start sliming up really bad they're typically not far off from passing. I'd also put some PVC tubing in the bucket so he has a hidey hole and that should ease the stress. High light levels will always stress them out quite a bit.

Glad to hear on the shrimp though! Good find!

Oh then he might have been at that point when we found him.. He was sticking up out of the sand and when my son Quentin was trying to get him he was very slimy. But we would love to get another one...

Hard to say, they're slimey little buggers from the get go, but when they get really stressed you can practically see the slime dripping off in gobs.

In truth it's probably easier and less stressful to catch them with a hook. Just use a 5/0 or 6/0 khale hook with a mud minnow or dead mullet with its' head broken back. Drag it along the bottom and you'll feel a little tug. Let him chomp for a bit and reel him in. That specific hook won't get far down his mouth nor do much damage. Avoid treble hooks like the plague! :) lol
