I agree an mp40 would be great but they are too proud of those things.

I have an MP40wES with a bad controller that you can have for $150 or I can buy the QD controller and you can have it for $225

Thanks for the offer. I think 2 pp8's will do the trick. And they will be more cost effective.

LOL! Yes, Ecotech "love" their creations. :)

2 PP8's will work well for quite awhile. I've been running some RW-15's for awhile, but recently put a sea sweep on one side of my 120g. The RW-15 that it replaced is in another tank already, and still work great. I've had them for almost 2 years now, with "zero" problems.

I like a BM Curve 5 or 7 for your tank. My Curve 7 is a bit underkill, but it pulls some "mean mud" on the daily! I had a Coral Box D700 in there, but that's been transferred to a larger system. It pulled well, but was a little "too-overkill" for my 120g.

For a first tank, you're doing very well on your build! Good luck with everything!

I'm looking into rodi systems. Is a 6 stage system necessary or will a 4 stage be enough?

I would get at least a five stage.
Sediment, 2 carbons, membrane and DI. The 6 stage just has an extra DI stage that is not really needed but is nice to have. I would much rather have the 2 carbon stages since those are what protect your membrane.
You could easily add the second DI to make it a 6 stage down the road if you like. I've had a 5 stage for 8 years that ive been happy with.

I am looking at the systems on brs and the 4 stage plus is affordable but the 6 stage is a little to high.

That is a good idea but my wife found the brs 6 stage plus for $210.00 on ebay so I had to order it.

My rodi unit is on the way and I'm trying to make a list of what else I need for my water making station. Brute trash can, cheap power head, refractometer. I also have no idea what salt to get.

That an argument waiting to happen. Haha.

Many, many opinions. I use Red Sea Coral Pro. Very popular. I've used Instant Ocean, good product, also popular.
Also used Tropic Marin but the alk is low. Zeovit guys use this a lot. I really liked it but didn't like having to dose alk.

Whatever you use constantly use it so you learn it's effects on your tank. With a reef tank constancy is key.

Thank you very much for your input. The first thing I will have to do with the salt is cure some dry rock. Would you recommend going cheap on the salt for that process our is it necessary to use higher quality salt.

I've never cured rock but it doesn't seem like it would matter. The base is all the same.

I have a piece of pvc pipe to stir the water with as the salt goes in.

I also have a scoop that I always use. This way I can count and know when to start checking the refractor. For my brute it's 7+ scoops. 8 is too much.

When you get the salt make sure you mix the salt as some of the heavier elements settle to the bottom of the container. Especially the bucket. This is a pain but necessary.
