A lock box to put money in so you can't spend it until you have enough to buy the right equipment.

I would say buy the korallias... 30$ would get you one. I have the tank and stand, return pump, and the stuff to build a sump and lights for the thing. nothing I can do for powerheads or skimmer. everything else can be built or I have ready.

as a side not. buying tanks are like buying a house. your first one is usually not the one you grow old in... after a year you will learn what you like and do not like about this setup and likely upgrade after you start getting aquainted.. learn on the 46, then do like a 125 when you get it down.

That's what I plan, but here in a year or 2 ill probably be moving out. So I think after college ill really upgrade to a bigger tank. Just keep the 36 for now.

you need to decide what take you want to keep, before you start buying.

that being said What kinds of corals do you want to keep? In my 46 bow tank i was using 1 korali power head and was barely getting enough flow for sps. Lighting i would say buy a nice t-5 fixture or buy Led lights, or make a combo like me. for the overflow there are tons of ways to do it, but first decide if you wanted it drilled or not. I think city pets and a few members have drilled tanks in the past. If you don't drill it then look at the crq overflow box.

Since you striped for cash, save every penny you can get! Try doing work for neighbors. I mowed my neighbors yards and was getting 100 bucks every 2 weeks, of course half went into my savings but still.

This is the BIGGEST thing you have to decide. Everything else will fallow. But if you dont know what you are going to do, it will be a mess and you will buy something you dont need and end up either being unhappy or spending more money.

What are you going to do with it? We can guide you to the right equipment/equipment you need if you specify your coral/invert/fish choices.

Probably just peps, a cleaner shrimp or two. A goby/pistol shrimp pair, probably a pair of clowns, Elibii Angel. And probably softies and LPS. Maybe some SPS.
